“Sounds like a horror film I’m starring in. Am I horror film material? Wait, no, am I even the star?” – Fan Tong

.

.

The Eastern City looming in silence continued to radiate at night. Torches on the city wall lightened the gates and surrounding periphery.

The Eastern City. The board inscribed with these three words hung majestically above the city doors. The stone wall seemed a solid structure despite its long existence; the bricks felt clean and placid, displaying no signs of weathering.

Across the widely-welcoming gates, one could see orderly roads and houses. The frame-work of these civilian dwellings remained primarily low-set and simple, complementing the appearance of the city’s outskirts.

Some businesses still haven’t closed in this dead of night. The alleys clustered with them all bustled lively and illuminated like day, contrasting with the soundless residential areas.

On his way to the city, Fan Tong was already drilled with much of this world’s knowledge.

According to what they said, this world contains a treasure called “Shen Yue”. They didn’t clarify on exactly what this thing is, but Fan Tong assumed it’s probably similar to the satellites orbiting Earth. The clothing and architecture here though, showed a prehistoric and antique civilization. No one would know what a satellite is, and so Fan Tong could not confirm with them.

It’s said that a long time ago, the Eastern City’s Queen and the Western City’s Emperor discovered Shen Yue together. Fan Tong took a while until he realized “Luo Yue1” actually refers to the Western City. Since the moon sets on their side, they are named as so. As for the Western City’s residents, they call the Eastern City “Ye Zhi2”, referring to how the morning sun always rises from the East.

Shen Yue possesses incredible power. Not only can it lure souls across the universe to this one, it can provide these wandering spirits with new bodies. However, the souls attracted by Shen Yue must fit under certain conditions. People who died in an accident, people who died filled with regrets, children who died before fully maturing; it’s these types of souls who are more likely beckoned to this world.

Fan Tong carried loads of doubts when he heard this. Actually, he suspected Shen Yue probably grabs living souls as well. If not, why couldn’t he even remember his own death and just miraculously ended up here?

On side note, current citizens would aid humans from alien worlds in becoming familiar with the culture here. To settle the new members quickly as New Residents, they’d cast memory suppression spells, sealing off parts of the person’s original memory. That’s exactly what Ling Shi just performed on Fan Tong. Fan Tong was unconscious for but a moment when he encountered the spell.

In that same moment, Ling Shi warped back to the city. As for Luo Shi, he traveled on foot with everyone else. Apparently, they did prepare seals to teleport home, but it’d be wasteful to use them unless it’s a crucial situation. It ended with Ling Shi walking home, explaining basic knowledge to Fan Tong along the way.

After joining the Eastern City, residents may polish their skills to improve their social standing. As a reward for each rise in rank, part of their original memories will recover. Fan Tong cared little for his sealed memories. What’s sealed cannot be remembered, and thus he wouldn’t be able to connect their missing links to other events anyway. Frankly, he’s just not motivated at all to put forth the effort.

Fan Tong wasn’t aware which memories Ling Shi sealed away, but since nothing felt off, then everything should be okay.

“After we return to the city, we’ll prepare a temporary home for you. A specialist will come tomorrow and explain.”

“Ok.”

Since their departure at dusk to now, more than half the night has passed, and fatigue could be seen on everyone’s faces. Fan Tong also felt exhausted, but he became exhausted just from walking to the city.

Until their arrival at the Eastern City’s entrance, Luo Shi didn’t talk to him again. Fan Tong wanted to ask a few questions, but in this situation, the smart man would remain quiet.

Listening to explanations alone was very simple. All he had to do was to go “uh huh”, “okay”, “uh huh uh huh” the whole time. These responses required little variation, maybe a change to “wha?” at most, but that’s not too difficult. Just wait for more explanations and he could continue to go “uh huh uh huh” again. Very convenient.

The small troop grew delighted upon seeing their home city. Everyone wanted to rush back and rest, but a situation suddenly occurred.

They heard frantic footsteps from afar. No, it was from afar, but in a flash, the sound was no longer from a distant place and approached at an alarming speed. Everyone turned to look, and when they saw a person rocketing towards the gate while driving a magical beast, all froze in expression and parted to the sides in tacit agreement. All but Fan Tong, that is.

Fan Tong admits that his response reflex is a bit slow and his eyes aren’t the best either, but…

“Aghhhhhhh! Why’s there a person in the middle of the road!”

But… is this universe really such a hazardous place? Where people with slower reactions and less than perfect eyesight are killed at any moment?

When Fan Tong heard that person’s cry and got trampled flat by his dutiful beast, he suspected and really wanted to ask… is this what people call illegal driving?

As for the pain, he’d get used to it after a while right? Actually, would he get used to it or get tired of it?

“Fan Tong! How come you died again?”

Before his soul completely left the body, Luo Shi screamed at him in disbelief.

“Fan Tong! How come you died again!”

The last time was because you killed me! You don’t have a right to ask!

Although Fan Tong ached to scream back, he would have to wait until his body has regenerated.

Experience often upsets theory. If you’ve experienced it, you’ll understand it. What’s happened to you, you will never forget. Experience is the best method to learning. All hired employees must undergo a training period, an unpaid month to associate with our company’s environment… In any case, all these quotes generally convey: Whether you understand it or not, no one knows. Probably you don’t know either. So let’s have you experience it, and you’ll see…

Fan Tong is currently living this principle – using death to understand Easten City’s resurrection system, the great complex powered under Shen Yue’s influence: the Pond.

If a New Resident bearing the Eastern city’s mark dies, his soul will be delivered to the bottom of the city’s Pond. Shen Yue’s energy will construct for the soul a new body, guaranteed to look exactly the same as before. The skills and knowledge developed before, not one will be missing.

However, the Pond’s system still wasn’t as considerate as the passageway. Fan Tong’s missing his clothes. This made him want to complain that the “Not one will be missing” commercial is a scam.

Awfully deep and as wide as a lake, the Pond almost caused he-who’s-not-acquainted-with-water to become a fresh, floating corpse again. Luckily, Luo Shi was very altruistic and brought a batch of people to lug him out. If not, he’d probably drown, die, regenerate, and drown again until someone finds him.

Fan Tong felt that the system, as though designed to force the creation of swimming experts, is truly not human-friendly. If something happened, that Pond would be filled with his corpses! Each one’s puffiness would be different as well. Isn’t that just disgusting? Has no one died this way before? Won’t others who die and regenerate here later be shocked?

Fan Tong believed this conversation will likely happen: “Ahh, Nice to meet you!” “No, I’ve seen your corpse before! What happened to you? A whole pile’s floating around. I carefully counted and you died a total of thirty-eight times! This is public contamination, you know! Can’t you at least clean up after yourself?” “Eh… but… to clean my own corpse, it feels really weird…” “Then what should we do? We, the people who bump into your corpses our whole way swimming to shore! That day, a whole hundred and eight people died. Every single one of them now recognizes your face!” “I’m really sorry. But wow, the corpses are already so bloated they’re distorted beyond recognition, I’m surprised you can still tell they’re me!”…

It’s possible to even become a celebrity because of this. Just the thought is horrifying.

Although people were here to salvage him, and he’s basically grateful at heart, it’s still difficult to cheer and rave when one’s being net out like a fish.

Upon boarding the boat and putting on a set of new clothes, his mood fell even heavier when Luo Shi solemnly spoke to him,

“I think you know already that New Residents will always regenerate here after death. Although that technically makes the New Residents immortals, don’t just casually die and think it’s okay. Let me tell you some things beforehand right now.”

Hearing this, Fan Tong really wanted to refute. Why would he think it’s alright to just casually die? He’s intensely scared of pain!

“The body you’re using now lasts ten years under normal circumstances. Dying within ten years is a waste of resources, and you must pay fees to change bodies. Don’t think no one will know if you secretly died. The Pond leaves a record. However, in consideration for the people who just arrived and are not used to this environment, the first three deaths within the year are free. It won’t be afterwards. You’ve already used two of those chances, so take good care of yourself.”

“What! Why? I didn’t even step into the Western City yet. That still counts?”

“This is the Eastern City! Is your brain still incomplete?”

Facing Luo Shi’s harsh outpour and stern image, Fan Tong once again failed to voice his suffering. Of course he knows this is the Eastern City. It’s exactly because he knows that it became the Western City when he tried to say it.

“It’s not cheap to change bodies, so careless New Residents often fall deep into debt. It’s not so much that you can’t regenerate if you’re unable to pay up, but severe pain will be produced during regeneration. Some people’s debts are so insanely large and impossible to pay back, they’d stop working, stop taking care of themselves, and would just mindlessly die. As punishment, pain will increase in proportion to the amount of debt.”

With Luo Shi’s every word, Fan Tong’s face scrunched up a bit more. When Luo Shi finished, Fan Tong’s expression could only be described as utterly miserable.

It’s already sad that I kept dying, and now I risk gathering a large debt as well? Those together already makes a tragedy, yet the pain to reborn will be more intense each time? This place really isn’t heaven but hell instead. Just what did I do to be clawed into hell? Did I gather too much karma3 as a fortune-teller?

Riding this wooden boat on the Pond sure feels like crossing River Styx. If this is true, then doesn’t that make Luo Shi and the others demon minions… Fan Tong flung off this wild flight of fancy and decided to empty his mind before reaching the coastline.

Eastern City’s resurrection pool isn’t contained in a shut room. Although the sides are surrounded by dirt walls, leaving only one exit at the city’s west, the Pond is open-air. One can see the vast clear sky, the white clouds, and the silver moon.

Hidden from sight now, the moon sank lower and became hidden underneath the horizon. That’s how long it took for everyone to finally go home. They stayed up the entire night.

Breathing a different air, absorbing a different atmosphere, gazing at the sky, and chilling under the somewhat breezy wind, Fan Tong finally felt his body relaxing and his emotions calming.

…If not for those two deaths today, the loveliness of everything would probably increase much more.

“I’ve never seen anyone die so quickly. I’m afraid you just set a new record,” said Person A.

“I know right? Last time, this guy got crushed when the city sign coincidentally fell on him. I thought that’d be the fastest record, but what do you know. Someone died before even reaching the city!”

Deriving pleasure from someone else’s misfortune and gloating about it isn’t right, you know. Even if I’m a record-holding champion, I don’t feel the slightest ounce of happiness! …twitched the corner of Fan Tong’s eye.

“Row the boat! What are you chatting for?” With an icy expression, Luo Shi immediately ended the dialogue. Person A and B hushed at once and diligently continued their work.

A few boats of similar size perched near the Pond’s shore, complete with oars and fishnets. It seems they are convenient measures for hauling friends and family at any time. Upon seeing this, Fan Tong didn’t know how he should feel.

After passing through a somewhat winding underground alley, Fan Tong finally entered the city’s innards. Fan Tong’s roving eyes glanced in all directions as he walked steadily and surely on the roads paved with ash-white bricks. Everything felt novel and fascinating.

The light of dawn began to surface from the east. Naturally, not many pedestrians strolled the streets so early in the morning. When Fan Tong gazed far into the north, a grand structure captivated him.

The looming structure was a mystical ice blue that projected a sense of transparency, probably an illusion caused by reflecting lights. It sat atop the only hill nearby, which further hinted at its distinguished status. Just by looking, spectators could find wholehearted respect for the solemn building.

“That’s…” Fan Tong pointed to the structure and asked the one walking next to him. The person yawned and answered in an exhausted tone.

“That’s Shen Wang Dian, dwelling of Her Majesty the Queen and the five Lords of Shi.”

Basically, where the dictators live right? Fan Tong understood.

But, Shi…?

Fan Tong glanced suspiciously at Luo Shi. Noticing him, Luo Shi furrowed his brows in discontent.

“That’s my house. Do you have a problem with that?”

“Yes.”

I really didn’t mean to start a fight.

“And what problem would that be?”

A dim shade shrouded Luo Shi’s delicate face. Fan Tong’s memory isn’t so horrible that he’d forget what happened that same day. He clearly remembers how he died the first time and the sensation when Driven Fire roasted his life to a black and white crisp…

What to do? Fan Tong became a bit scared. Even if he wanted to say “I just didn’t know the person welcoming me is a noble comparable to the queen,” there’s a very high chance the words will become insults belittling both of them instead.

He labored to find something that won’t sound odd even on reverse.

I could have just shook my head earlier! What possessed me to answer with words?

“Lord Luo Shi, we’ve arrived.”

Person B aptly spoke again and interrupted the atmosphere. On this, Luo Shi looked away. Feeling rescued, Fan Tong followed along and looked towards his temporary home in the Eastern City.

The home was one of many row houses4. It appeared bland yet proper, still acceptable and had nothing in particular worth complaining about.

“Before the employee assigned to inform you comes, do not wander out of here by yourself.”

Luo Shi instructed stolidly and reminded an extra note,

“We’re only lending this house to you temporarily. Although no one lives in it, it’s still government property. You will compensate for any loss or damage.”

Fees fees fees fees. Fan Tong found the Eastern City very stingy, demanding payment for every rebirth and asserting authority even in temporary housing. Is it because he hasn’t received his citizenship yet that the treatment is so horrible?

“Are you clear?”

This time, Fan Tong remembered to nod.

***

Fan Tong fell asleep at dusk, but that’s not the case for his tour guide. Right when he started catching some shuteye and drifted to a deeper slumber, his guest came knocking in and woke him up. Sleep deprivation currently at a maximum.

That’s how it is when one has a cheap life. I don’t even get the right to sleep a good night’s sleep… Lifting his muddled head, Fan Tong looked at the man beaming at him with a professional smile.

“Nice to meet you. I’m Mi Zhong, responsible for teaching you the required knowledge about Huan Shi and the Eastern City. Just call me by my name.”

Cadelle beetle?5 Fan Tong literally translated.

“What a nice name.”

No, I wanted to say what a strange name it was. Who would name themselves this? The world is really full of wonders.

While thinking this, Fan Tong remained fully ignorant about his own name’s oddity and how his current thoughts complemented his name.

“Thank you for your compliment. Before I take you to see some important landmarks, let me take care of the basics.”

Mi Zhong spoke while pulling a white object from his pocket. Fan Tong saw this before. That object usually hangs atop clothing as decoration, called a tassel or something.

“This white tassel is yours. I’ll explain to you the meaning behind it.”

Mi Zhong cleared his throat and explained eloquently with fine professionalism.

“Our city distinguishes social ranking using different colored tassels. The spectrum begins with black as the strongest, then descends to purple, red, blue, green, and white. All who have just arrived will receive white tassels, indicating blank records in their appraisal tests. Wage is determined based on this as well, with income increasing with higher-tiered colors. Within the same color, darker shades better the light. For example, navy indicates a stronger level than azure. Also, whites receive no wage. Everyone begins at zero. Please do well to increase your status.”

The Eastern City truly values money it seems. Fan Tong dejectedly received the white tassel that symbolized his uselessness.

The tassel dangling around Mi Zhong’s waist was pale green. According to Fan Tong’s memory, Luo Shi carried a scarlet tassel and led followers with reds and blues. As for Ling Shi, who appeared for only a second, Fan Tong didn’t notice.

“Stop looking, alright? My light green tassel allows very few money each month. Fortunately there are always newcomers, so I can at least work as a tour guide. If not, I wouldn’t have enough money to pay my debt when I accidentally die…”

Seeing the man scratch his head with sighs, Fan Tong didn’t know how to comfort him. After all, he’s in a stickier situation. Wasting two free rebirth opportunities right after arrival, he possessed no extra energy to sympathize with other people.

“What’s next? Since I am here, I should know who are in the ruling class, in case I offend any of them by mistake…”

I think I already offended one yesterday. A slightly depressed Fan Tong presumed.

“Our most honored figure is our ruler, Queen Xi Ying. The queen’s age isn’t important. She looks young anyways. You can only see her from a distance, since she only appears on certain public events. However, Shen Yue Jie, the holiday commemorating the launch of Shen Yue, will take place half a month from now. Her Majesty and the five Lords will ride to Shen Yue’s Altar and perform a ceremony. When the time comes, you can follow their carriage and revere their noble presence.”

Fan Tong nodded and Mi Zhong continued.

“Second to our Queen are our five Lords of “Shi”. I believe you’ve seen Lord Ling Shi already. As the executive controlling memories, he personally performs a ritual with every New Resident to seal their memories. Consequently, each one is enslaved by his beauty. The event rewarding memories to those who rose in rank is also carried out by Lord Ling Shi himself! Sigh, why can’t I scale up faster. I really want to see Lord Ling Shi…”

That last sentence was just your inner voice and desire, right? Is this level of professionalism alright as a tour guide?

While Fan Tong doesn’t deny Ling Shi’s beauty, his feelings after Ling Shi dictated his death was a whole different matter.

“Lord Ling Shi also acts as the Queen’s close attendant. I heard he tends to every trivial matter, from dressing her hair to preparing her bath. Ah, I envy the Queen so much…”

You’re still not done? Also, don’t people usually envy the one who serves the Queen? Why is it switched? If hair and bath duties are included, then what about bed service?

“As for Lord Yin Shi, how should I say this… he’s very frank and lacks a royal conscience. An eccentric person. Probably because he’s too much of an eccentric, he still can’t find a dating partner despite being a talented and handsome guy. It’s quite unbelievable.”

“Eccentric?”

“Yeah. I heard he was out handling some affairs for a month and finally returned yesterday night. He lost control while riding a moshou6 he caught for fun. That devastated a good sum of businesses after he charged through the city gates. In the end, the disturbance shocked the Queen and she scolded him as punishment.”

…

At least Fan Tong now knows who murdered him last night, and it appears he can never hope to ask for compensation.

“The one who brought you home yesterday is Lord Luo Shi, the youngest among the five lords. He’s only fourteen this year. His personality’s a bit hard to get along with… Right, he’s also the Queen’s son. This background added on to that personality makes him feel quite distant.”

Fan Tong turned pale.

Dammit! Of all things to offend I offend a prince!

“You look horrible. What happened?”

Fan Tong listlessly shook his head. A slip of the tongue can cause eternal hate, and this might cause him another hundred deaths.

“Lord Wei Shi doesn’t appear very often. He’s probably in his thirties now. There’s not much information about him, but it seems his word weighs very heavily on the Queen. Many of her orders are decreed from his advice and suggestions. Ah, Lord Wei Shi also favors Natural Residents. He’s always bullying some New Resident and keeps suggesting unfair regulations, so New Residents generally hate him.”

Fan Tong made sure to remember his name well and waited for Mi Zhong to continue with everyone’s introductions.

“Finally, there’s Lord Hui Shi… Eh, let’s skip him for now. Let me tell you about Luo Yue.”

“Eh?”

There are clearly five of them, yet he only introduces four. He even changed the topic so obviously. Fan Tong couldn’t help but feel confused. This really causes concern.

“Is this Lord Hui Shi even more hateful than Wei Shi?”

After finishing the sentence, Fan Tong wanted to cry a bit. Why does that ten percent chance of speaking correctly only happen during trivial conversation?

“That’s not true at all! Lord Hui Shi is a very good person, and everyone really likes him! Except… Sigh…”

After Mi Zhong passionately refuted, he wistfully adopted a sad tone.

“Oh well, it doesn’t hurt to tell you. Lord Hui Shi has been missing for two years already, and there’re no news of him even now. He disappeared at seventeen, and at that time, he already held a distinguished pale black tassel. You can say he’s an exceptional prodigy. That’s why the Queen adopted him as her son in the first place. In this situation, some say he died while others say he betrayed us. The matter is truly saddening… but don’t let Her Majesty and Lord Luo Shi hear about this. It’s taboo.”

Fan Tong never lived here before and thus could not sympathize with this story about Hui Shi. He just found one thing unclear.

“Don’t Natural Residents die in the Pond after living?”

And the word reversal functions returns to normal. Luck really doesn’t come in pairs. Honestly, is this curse some A.I. programmed with self-learning capabilities? It already sensed that “Natural Residents” is the antonym of “New Residents”…

“What are you talking about? Are you referring to how New Residents can be reborn after dying? The Queen and the five Lords are all Natural Residents. If they die, they die. They can’t relive. New Residents can keep reviving because we were already souls upon arrival. Basically, we’re just dead souls borrowing bodies from Shen Yue to move around. On the contrary, this blessing doesn’t apply to the people born here. It’s ironic, isn’t it? Since Shen Yue is originally from this world.”

What Fan Tong found most ironic is the fact that he still doesn’t know how he died. He feels frustrated every time he recalls this matter.

“Of course this isn’t definite either. A droplet of royal blood from our Queen or Luo Yue’s Emperor can revive a Natural Resident, though that person must not have died for longer than six hours. The Queen and Emperor can only use this power once a month, and when they do, they remain at a weakened state the entire day, which also caused our Queen to dislike using this power. Since Natural Residents can only relive once, Lord Wei Shi finds their lives more precious and in turn ignores the New Residents completely.”

Could this miraculous power be the reason why people enthroned them as king and queen? If it only works once a month, then they really do have to choose carefully. If they revived some insignificant person right before an important one dies, then that’d really create a problematic situation.

Mi Zhong began to speak again while Fan Tong’s thoughts wandered. Fan Tong paused in his thoughts and listened closely.

“New Residents aren’t indestructible either, you know. Huan Shi weaponry is split between normal weapons and soul purging weapons. New Residents’ souls disintegrate when they are killed by soul purging weapons. Afterwards, they will never regenerate again. Lord Wei Shi sees the advantage New Residents have, so he granted a soul purging weapon to each Natural Resident as protection. He even declared a verdict to purge any New Resident if they killed a Natural Resident without legitimate reason. That’s why I’d suggest you avoid angering any of the original residents here. The Eastern City ardently protects them.”

Unfortunately, Fan Tong already did, and a big fish at that. He could only pray that Luo Shi isn’t a stingy person who’d hold a grudge on such a small matter.

“Weapons here can speak, so don’t be too startled when they do. Also, the weapon must acknowledge you before you can use it. If you’re using a kitchen knife or a similar everyday tool, then the effect relatively stays the same even without acknowledgment. I’ll teach you how to distinguish between New and Natural Residents once we go out… right, I said I’d tell you about Luo Yue earlier. I almost forgot.”

Mi Zhong put down the bag he was carrying and informed Fan Tong that inside it are the city’s clothes and provisions. Fan Tong faultily said “You’re welcome” instead of “Thanks”, and Mi Zhong continued explaining after some moments of awkward silence.

“Luo Yue is the Western City’s alias. You should know already right? Everyone calls it that. The Western City’s young Emperor is called Englar. We’re uncertain of his age. Some say he’s eighteen, some say he’s not even ten. Anyways, the age should be under twenty. Luo Yue’s law restricts anyone from publicizing his age. I heard he remains hidden for most public events, and even the more important ones are attended by substitutes. Probably no one will see his face until he becomes an adult. That side’s quite complicated, isn’t it… You have to remember, the people from Luo Yue are our enemies. If you happen to cross paths with them while traveling, don’t hesitate to kill them.”

After saying so much in one go, Mi Zhong took a short break. He drank a gulp of water and took a deep breath.

“They discriminate ranks using specialized embroidery on their belt. Five copper threads upgrade to one silver. Five silvers become one gold. The highest rank exhibits three golden threads, and that equates to our pure black tassel. Extremely rarely do people possess it. Alright, that’s it for now. Let’s head out. My mouth’s tired already.”

Fan Tong doesn’t mind going out right now, other than the fact that he seriously needs some sleep. Mi Zhong saw him put on the white tassel and attentively patched on more details.

“There’s something else I must tell you. Lower ranks can challenge and defeat higher ranks to rise in ranking. There’s no punishment for losing. However, the higher ranked person will drop one sub-level lower. For instance, a forest green will demote to a grass green. You’re still a white right now, so no worries. You’re not allowed to refuse challenges, so knit your social network well or trouble will constantly follow you… Definitely do not challenge me!”

Do I look so brutal and ruthless?

Leaving the house, Mi Zhong explained that they will first register at the school campus. Only then did Fan Tong discover the existence of mandatory classes in this world. Along their route towards school, Mi Zhong pointed out important landmarks and explained their significance.

“Look. That’s the Pond on the west. If you accidentally died, that’s where you’ll pop back out.”

I know. I just popped out from there yesterday. Fan Tong silently fell glum.

“You see that eye-catching building over there? That’s Shen Wang Dian, where Queen Xi Ying and the five Lords live.”

I know. Because of that building, I got someone to hate me yesterday.

“The main gate is situated in the far south. It’s magnificent!”

I know that too. I died there yesterday.

While Fan Tong internally answered, he felt more and more depressed about his experiences in this world. He couldn’t find anything good at all.

Countless pedestrians strolled the streets now that it’s daytime. The eventful activities and multitude of humans created a lively atmosphere befitting this metropolitan city. Fan Tong also took this chance to scan everyone’s tassel. Most tassels were blues and greens, rarely red, while purples and blacks were nowhere to be seen.

“Come look on that side. Those people are Natural Residents.”

Mi Zhong suddenly pulled on him and pointed to a crowd. Fan Tong stared for a while, but ultimately could not tell the difference.

“You can’t tell? There are no marks on Natural Residents.”

“Oh!”

Fan Tong felt suddenly enlightened.

The Eastern City uses a spell to embed a mark on each New Resident when they arrive. With this mark, the person’s soul will transfer to the Eastern City’s Pond after death. This goes for the Western City as well. As for Natural Residents, they do not revive and thus have no need for marks.

This so-called mark is planted within the body, and those with the same mark read the same wavelength. Natural Residents do not possess any waves, while New Residents of the Western City hold a different wavelength. So it’s actually quite simple to make distinction among the different classes.

“The school campus is just ahead of us. Let’s go.”

Actually, Fan Tong already felt impelled to sleep standing up. But upon hearing this, he could only force himself to stay awake and stride forward.

“Oh yeah. What’s your dying regret? Mind if I ask?”

Being asked so suddenly, Fan Tong felt a bit troubled.

“I don’t know how I lived. I don’t think I ever lived.”

“Oh? So you want to start anew? How noble.”

I think you misunderstood me. I wanted to say “died”, but it swapped with “lived”. Even this small change could create a whole different meaning. How interesting.

“Theoretically, only people who’ve died filled with regrets are summoned here. Some are so obsessed they could never pick themselves back up. Ah, you see, that’s one right there.”

Fan Tong followed the direction of his fingers and saw a man coiled on the ground. With his face distorted, the man repeatedly muttered an ambiguous statement, “I will be God of the new world!”

“How did he die?”

“It’s said that he died bearing more than two thousand gunshots.”

Wow, two thousand shots! A superman?

“People here died all sorts of bizarre deaths. I heard this woman in Luo Yue died choking on an apple, but a few days later she disappeared. It seems she came back to life after spitting the apple back out. Mind blowing, right?”

Of course this is a more extreme example. After hearing this, Fan Tong also made an effort to recall his past life. Maybe he ate something that could’ve choked him; if that was true, then there’s a chance he can live again…

Alas, he could not remember what his last supper was. Sigh.

The campus is positioned on the eastern side of the city. The Eastern City’s landmarks are quite easy to memorize. School in the east, Pond in the west, city gates in the south, and Shen Wang Dian in the north, all facing each other in those four directions.

Because the city boasts quite a large landmass, it takes considerable time to walk from the southern point to the northern one. That’s why they made use of a few portals along the way. Fan Tong didn’t have the photographic memory to know his way in one swoop, so he’ll have to rely on Mi Zhong to guide him back later.

Hopefully Mi Zhong will draw me a map for the way home. Fan Tong prayed.

As the only place that creates new talents in Eastern City, the school campus is naturally very extensive and grand as well. After entering the stately campus doors, one could see three main structures, Shufa Xuan, Fuzhou Xuan, and Wushu Xuan.7 Each pavilion featured a distinct style of exquisite adornment. Mi Zhong brought Fan Tong to the General Affairs Department and registered for a uniform before beginning his explanation.

“New students begin with general studies on all three subjects. If you’re particularly able in a certain field, it’s not too late to specialize in it afterwards. Also, New Residents and Natural Residents study in different classes. Shufa Xuan’s marshall is Lord Yin Shi, Fuzhou Xuan’s is Lord Lin Shi, while Wushu Xuan’s is Lord Hui Shi… currently substituted by Lord Wei Shi.”

Fan Tong has some confidence in his calligraphy, so if Fuzhou requires writing charms, it might match him quite well. Shufa would be a brand new experience, so playing with it a bit doesn’t hurt. But as for Wushu, Fan Tong’s interest plummeted. Well, he’s that clumsy type of idiot who trips over his own feet anyway, so he doesn’t anticipate any good results there.

“Also, about the temporary home you live in right now…”

Mi Zhong suddenly remembered that this matter still hasn’t been covered and thus hurriedly added,

“That’s because your bed location isn’t determined yet. Basically, three people with white or green tassels share one room. The space will be much more compact than it is now, so be mentally prepared.”

Of course there’s no such thing as good news in this world.

After completing registration, Mi Zhong handed him the school schedule, reminded him to go to school on time, and started guiding him home.

“Once your bed area is decided, I will come again to help you move. This is my contact information. If you need anything, just ask, but I guess you’ll have to learn the basics of Fuzhou first before using this… Oh right, there’s also this.”

Seeing Mi Zhong rummaging around, Fan Tong almost thought he had a present for him. In the end, it was just a survey.

“My tour was quite detailed and thorough, wasn’t it? Please help me fill out this questionnaire. It’d raise my salary. Please leave me some face and fill in “Very Satisfied”, okay?”

“…”

Fan Tong was left speechless.

In the middle of his battle with the survey, the door from the housing next to them flung open and out walked a person.

“Yo, Mi Zhong. Leading a newcomer?”

“Yeah, you too? Does someone live there?”

“About this, you see. Someone lived here all along, but the one responsible for the guy didn’t leave a note before resigning, so everyone just neglected his existence. He never went to school either. Only when a newcomer came in yesterday did they notice his situation on the register. And so they sent me to check things out.”

After he finished, the man mumbled, “But the person inside doesn’t seem to match with the profile…”

“Hey, Fan Tong. You have a neighbor now. There’s a big chance you guys will be placed in the same room, so get along okay?”

Mi Zhong lightly patted Fan Tong’s shoulders the same time Fan Tong finished the survey. Mi Zhong took the paper to look.

“…Fan Tong, you wrote my name wrong. It’s Mi Zhong, not Mi Chong…”

When Fan Tong sent Mi Zhong off and jumped to bed, it was still a shining afternoon. Thus, the moon was already hanging high at night when he woke up again.

Fan Tong didn’t want to become a nocturnal animal. School starts classes in the daytime, and there are no night classes. This abnormal sleeping schedule must be fixed, or his new life in the Eastern City will be even more worrisome.

At that same moment, Fan Tong noticed his growling stomach. He did go for a day without eating anything. Mi Zhong told him that for his three meals, “nasty, insubstantial” public rations are provided in the streets at set times everyday. If he wants to eat better, then he can go to a restaurant. Of course that requires money.

Fan Tong was here for only a day, so naturally he wouldn’t have any money on him. Even if he waited until payday, a white tassel wouldn’t earn him anything.

But he was agonizingly hungry. Staring blankly at home with an empty stomach was also very painful. So, although it’s pointless to shop the streets with an empty wallet, Fan Tong still set out for the night businesses.

A hundred qians makes one string, and the cheapest food here still asks for three strings… Mi Zhong told him that pale green tassels claim two strings each month. Also, a new body after rebirth requires one hundred strings. Thanks to that, low level residents who’ve died a couple times are already burdened with a large debt. Even blues get only about ten strings, so it’s very hard to survive just by claiming the monthly salary. Almost everyone finds a job to sell their labor, and one of the simplest occupations includes being a tour guide.

There’s no hope for Fan Tong in becoming a tour guide with that mouth of his. He might even have to pay reparations for misleading newcomers. If he accidentally called Englar the Emperor of Eastern City, reparations alone won’t be enough…

No one would gift him with food even if he kept staring, so Fan Tong dully walked away. He decided to leisurely stroll around the neighborhood and hoped that that will make him forget about hunger a little bit.

Walking without direction, Fan Tong wandered to the main gate. The doors remained open at night. This style differed from what he remembered. He gave it some more attention because of this and noticed a human shadow standing on the side.

The shadow’s profile looked rather familiar. Fan Tong stepped closer and recognized it.

It’s Luo Shi.

Knowing it’s Luo Shi, Fan Tong wanted to turn around and run. But, he was a bit curious about the reason why Luo Shi didn’t sleep but rather ran here in the middle of the night. The feet that rotated for escape turned back.

Under the gentle, delicate moonlight, the young boy’s silhouette appeared fleeting and unreal. It even carried a sense of vulnerability.

He seemed to be waiting for someone, gazing motionlessly towards the gates’ exterior. Melancholy tinted his graceful features.

Nights are in fact quite chilly this season of the year. Mi Zhong mentioned that New Residents are fairly immune to weather conditions, so when Fan Tong felt pain from that gust of cold wind blown at his face, he could tell just how cold the temperature is right now.

Yet Luo Shi stood there as though he couldn’t feel the cold. He wouldn’t find something to cover and warm himself.

That silhouette looked very lonely.

Suddenly, Fan Tong wanted to offer Luo Shi a fortune-telling… Does this count as workholism acting up? Even if his fortune-telling is inaccurate, Fan Tong wanted to help Luo Shi get rid of any knots inside his heart. He wanted to help out, no matter how minute it may be.

“Who is it?”

When Luo Shi discovered someone behind him and turned around, his attitude was very cautious and hostile. Realizing it was Fan Tong, he was stunned for a moment before raising his eyebrows.

“Fan Tong, why is it you again?”

“Passing by…”

“If you’re passing by, why did you stop here?”

Forcing me to talk now is it.

Fan Tong despairingly decided to try and explain, giving it up to the heavens to decide what will spout from his mouth. Out of the blue, a chain of growling noises interrupted the hushed setting. The origin was his stomach.

Luo Shi’s gaped at him with an inexplicable expression. Fan Tong paused for half a day until he finally said this one sentence.

“I was just wondering… if I could borrow some money from you for dinner…”

A frosty wind blew by.

Fan Tong felt that even crows cawing wouldn’t be too weird right now.

◎ Fan Tong’s Afterword

After many twists and turns and experiencing things I’ve never imagined before, it seems I have officially settled in a temporary home. Officially yet temporarily. I know this is confusing, but that’s how things are. I’m hungry and tired. If you don’t get it, it’s fine.

On that note, I really didn’t think I would be stomped to death by some magical beast. I never even thought of being trampled by horses or cows or dogs or cats before… What, you think cats and dogs can’t crush someone to death? People who underestimate them will one day die squashed by them. If you’re scared, my disaster-evading services are available for 500NT8 each time. It’s a very reasonable price… Oh, I really have run a fortune-telling business for too long. I forgot that I don’t do that anymore. Pretend I didn’t say anything. What! Is it weird for fortune-tellers to help others avoid disasters? I’m an omnipotent, heaven-loved talent that’s invincible in everything, okay? Don’t mind the petty things!

This is terrible. My brain is empty when my stomach is empty. I’ve pretty much forgotten everything Mi Chong introduced to me today. It’s really hard to register so much information at once. If only I had a recorder and could study from it, but this place doesn’t seem like it’d have one. I can only rely on my unreliable brain. This really makes me worried.

…? I got the name wrong? Well, Mi Chong is easier to remember, plus the pronunciation’s the same anyways. He wouldn’t know. Calling it this way will aid my memory, so what’s the problem? You ask why I don’t call myself fantong9? You’re joking! What normal person can’t remember their own name! If you can find just one… hundred twenty people who can’t, I’ll start using my name backwards!

What’s the significance behind the number one hundred twenty? There’s no significance behind it of course. The number’s got no sincerity in it? Well, too bad, I’m insincere. My name sounds better backwards anyways? …That’s going a bit too far.

Alright, I’m going to go eat now. Although I did imagine myself dying from hunger back when I did my fortune-telling business, it’s still lame to pay for my own death. A good-hearted money tree is hard to come by, so it doesn’t hurt to ask for an occassional bowl of rice or two.

…Well, I think I’ll eat a bit less. Borrowed money still has to be paid back.

TL Note: Gong Hua is male, but everyone thinks he is female so far. So when the narrator speaks, Gong Hua is referred to as “he”, but in dialogue the characters use “she”. Hopefully this won’t confuse any of you. ^^

.

I have been consistently learning new things. But the more I learn, the more confused I get.
Have I improved or gotten steadily worse?
– Gong Hua

Before he could finish his sentence, Mila raised her voice and hollered, “Cedric! What did you say? Whoever dares to sell Gong Hua will have to fight me until death for it!”

Owen has long been confused by the pile of information thrown at him. It was only when he heard Mila’s shriek did he finally react. Moreover, his reaction compared to Mila’s was a lot more straightforward. He raised his fist, glaring menacingly at Cedric, as if cautioning him – if he dares to say one more word, he would start being violent.

“Don’t get so agitated!” Cedric frantically put up his hands to surrender, shaking his head vigorously as he explained himself. “I was just testing you guys, to see what you guys would do in this predicament. I really don’t have any other intentions!”

Upon hearing his words, Mila was still somewhat aggravated. She didn’t hold much trust in Cedric’s explanations. But, Owen, in contrast, dropped his fist. He bellowed, “You bastard, don’t experiment like that every single time! If not for the fact that you have stayed in this military camp for such a long time and everyone has gotten used to your weird temper, you would have been beaten to death a long time ago!”

Cedric smiled weakly.

“Gong Hua is really from the Leaf Tribe?” Mila questioned with uncertainty. After she found out that Gong Hua wasn’t human, she felt a little confused. This is due to the fact that she has zero understanding of the Leaf Tribe and doesn’t know for sure whether the tribe is good or bad.

Cedric honestly replied, “That is one thing I am sure of. I also have little knowledge of the Leaf Tribe, and I’ve only heard of a few passing rumors. So, it’s up to you to believe what Gong Hua says.”

“Of course I believe her!” Owen immediately roared in response.

This time, it was Mila who was hesitating, and she eventually couldn’t help but murmur softly, “Leaf… one person from the Leaf Tribe can obliterate an entire town on their own?”

“If that was possible, I would have killed her long ago,” Cedric put his point across bluntly.

Mila widened her eyes, whilst Cedric went quiet and did not offer any further explanations.

Owen quickly tugged at Mila and whispered in her ear, “Cedric’s entire family, including his parents and sister, died in that town. If Cas had not whined to the military group about coming here for an inspection, he would also have died there! During the past month or so, these two brothers are not having it easy. That’s why I’m taking this chance to persuade Cedric to bring Cas out for a breath of fresh air.”

Mila nodded her head, and even though she tried her best to suppress it, she could not help but show a sorrowful expression.

Cedric didn’t seem to want to bring up his family matters. He shifted the topic of conversation back to Gong Hua, “If she’s from the Leaf Tribe, then it’s even more impossible for her to be the murderer. The Leaf Tribe is well known for their altruistic nature. Even though they are born gifted and could easily become Spirit Charmers, they couldn’t possibly be this powerful…… To tell you the truth, I have no idea how anything could be this powerful.”

His words seemed to put Mila’s heart at ease. She completely trusts Gong Hua, so Gong Hua must be of the Leaf Tribe. Moreover, Cedric had mentioned that the Leaf Tribe is a benevolent species. As long as Gong Hua was kind, it didn’t matter whether she was human or something else.

Owen glanced further down and could not help but point out, “Let’s go back quickly! Your Cas is full of odd tricks and I don’t know how he’ll pester Gong Hua.”

Cedric taunted him, “Oh, how caring you are towards your dear daughter! Relax, Cas is still young; there’s nothing much he can do towards Gong Hua.”

“What nonsense are you talking about?” Once Owen finished reprimanding Cedric, he immediately spun around, walking briskly as he lashed out, “I’m not wasting my saliva on you anymore. I’ll go take a look at those two brats. There’re no adults around and it would be disastrous if they got out of hand!”

Cedric and Mila broke into smiles, but the moment Owen turned around, Cedric whispered to Mila in a low voice, “If you guys are already acting like this, will you be able to leave Gong Hua behind in a city or village when the time comes?”

Mila smiled and answered, “I just can’t bear to do it. It’ll be fine to leave her in the army. Gong Hua is no longer a child, and she is a fast learner, so she’ll be able to help out with a lot of stuff.”

Cedric shook his head in exasperation, “You like that kid that much? She doesn’t look that special. Her looks are delicate, yet she can’t be considered beautiful. Her appearance just seems to stray a little from the legends that speak of the Leaf Tribe.”

Mila chuckled, “Once you get along with her, you’ll definitely like that child.”

“Will I?”

Cedric didn’t think along those same lines. For him, the issue of ‘liking her’ isn’t important now. What’s vital is to source out the murderer who has decimated his town and make him pay; an eye for an eye!

***

As the adults left, Cas clutched Gong Hua’s hand and discovered that the other party’s hands were smooth and exquisite, wonderful to touch. The people around him, even the girls, never had hands so delicate. So he couldn’t help but stroke them a few more times like a pervert. Yet the moments he raised his head, he saw Gong Hua staring at his hands intensely.

Cas’ face reddened and he quickly used words to divert the other party’s attention. “Jie jie, how old are you this year?”

Gong Hua slightly lowered her head to face Cas, as Cas was shorter than her by half a head. She then replied, “I don’t know.”

“You don’t know?” Cas was dumbfounded and retorted suspiciously, “Why don’t you know? How long you’ve been born is how old you are!”

“I’ve always been sitting under the tree. I don’t know how long I’ve sat there, and how old I am.”

“You don’t know how long you’ve sat under the tree?” Cas got even more mystified. “How long can you sit under a tree? You mean, you lived under a tree?”

Gong Hua pondered it. Living under a tree seems to be right, so she nodded her head.

“Then, you must be good at climbing trees!” Cas came to his own conclusion, and jumped about ecstatically, “I also love climbing trees. Let’s climb trees together later, shall we?”

“Why should we climb trees?” Gong Hua didn’t quite understand.

Cas froze. Having climbed trees for so long, he has never really thought of the reason he did that. He contemplated it, and forcefully came up with an answer, “Because it’s fun?”

“So climbing trees is a form of playing?” Gong Hua was eager to know what the word ‘play’ meant.

“Yeah!”

“Okay.” Gong Hua nodded her head.

“Climbing trees is good.”

Cas’s eyes lit up and almost glowed at Gong Hua’s answer. Ever since he joined the military, he has never met people close to his age. Even though Gong Hua looked much older than him and is a girl, he still felt like he had gained a playmate. He abruptly yelled ecstatically, “Then, let’s compete in climbing trees later!”

“What’s ‘compete’?” The word ‘compete’ added in front of ‘climbing trees’ made Gong Hua perplexed once more.

“We use it to see who can climb faster! The faster one wins!”

“What’s ‘win’?”

“Jie jie, you really have a lot of questions!”

Gong Hua nodded her head and admitted, “I do have a lot of problems.”

Cas suddenly burst out laughing and roared out, “Who would say that she has a lot of problems. The meaning changes when it’s phrased like that!”

“What does it mean?”

Rarely getting the opportunity to become a teacher, Cas acted all high and mighty as a senior would and said, “That means you have a lot of problems!”

Doesn’t that mean the same thing? Gong Hua was completely confused.

Luckily, Owen and the others returned then. Owen yelled out before he even came into proximity, “Cas, did you bully Gong Hua?”

“I didn’t!” Cas raised his voice even more. “I even answered many of her questions! You’re bullying me!”

“I’m sure I didn’t accuse you wrongly. You’re a brat full of weird ideas. You must have bullied Gong Hua!” Owen grappled Cas’ head and messed up his hair fiercely, shouting, “You little pervert, speak up! Did you take advantage of her?”

As he had indeed secretly touched her hands, Cas was speechless, feeling a little guilt-ridden.

“…What have you done?” Owen’s voice resonated loudly. He said it for the sake of it, but he never expected Cas to have actually done something.

Not only could Cas not answer, his face also turned beet red.

Upon seeing his expression, Owen’s jaw was close to dropping off. He stuttered, “You, you little pervert…”

Cedric never expected to run into this kind of problem upon his return. He had no idea what to do and could only glare at Cas.

As for Mila, she didn’t believe Cas would do anything outrageous. Hence, she directly asked Gong Hua, “Did Cas touch you?”

Gong Hua nodded, “He touched my hands.”

In order to clear the doubts those two men were having towards a boy, Mila had to ask a little more specifically, “Did he only touch your hands? What about other areas? Or did he say anything to you?”

Gong Hua nodded her head again and spoke, “He said climbing trees is playing and wanted to compete in climbing trees.”

After hearing what Gong Hua had to say, Mila spun around. She spread her hands out as she wore an amused smile on her face. The latter subsequently turned towards Cas and bellowed, “You sneaky little brat, I thought you really did something. Turns out it was only touching hands. Why the hell did your face redden like that? You’ve probably held hands with countless girls most of the time, haven’t you?”

Holding and touching are two different things! Cas retorted in his heart, yet he did not have the courage to say it out and risk getting reprimanded. Moreover, his own brother Cedric was still shooting him a piercing gaze with suspicion written all over his face.

“Enough, the both of you should stop bullying Cas!” Mila spoke, half amused, yet a little peeved. “Gong Hua has great strength and she’s taller than Cas by half a head! There’s no way Cas could mistreat her.”

Owen abruptly blared, “Mila, it’s not like you don’t know this. Gong Hua is just like a child! She doesn’t know anything. Should Cas do anything to her, she would not retaliate!”

Cedric dissented, “What exactly do you think my brother is, an incorrigible rascal? He’s only twelve! “What” can he do?”

“Who knows?” Owen snapped back, relentlessly.

The two men were intransigent, leaving no room for compromise. Watching from the side, Mila started to feel distressed, and immediately instructed Gong Hua, “Gong Hua, you must never allow men to touch you freely! Even if they’re slightly younger than you.”

“We can’t touch hands?” Gong Hua turned towards Cas.

Mila pondered it and said, “Holding hands is fine, but touching isn’t.” She knew Gong Hua wouldn’t understand the difference between holding and touching, so she grasped Gong Hua’s hands to demonstrate it.

Upon seeing his predicament, Cas’ face instantly caved in. He made eyes at Gong Hua, trying to signal her vigorously. It was a pity Gong Hua didn’t understand it. She then spoke frankly, “Cas just touched my hands.”

Mila froze and questioned, “Touch? Not hold hands?”

Gong Hua shook his head and affirmed while stroking Mila’s hand, “Touch.”

At Gong Hua’s words, the two men, who had been bickering earlier, became of one mind. They both shot Cas a merciless glare, while the latter got intimidated by the stares of the three adults and cried out, “That’s because Gong Hua’s hands are smooth and pleasing to touch. I couldn’t help but stroke a few times. That’s all!”

“Who gave you the permission to touch her? You perverted little rascal, I’ll definitely slaughter you today!”

“Don’t! I didn’t do it on purpose!” Cas abruptly darted, trying to escape an incoming death.
Owen bellowed and gave chase after the little pervert. It was a rare case for Cedric to sit by and refuse to help his brother. He merely shouted at him, infuriated, “Cas, you’re grounded!”

Watching from the side, Gong Hua felt bemused and questioned, “What’s the meaning of ‘slaughter’?”
Mila hesitated but continued to explain, “That means taking another person’s life.”

Gong Hua asked again, “Owen wants to take Cas’ life? But, we’re going to play. We can’t play when he has no life.”

Mila immediately explained, “He’s just joking! I’ve explained to you the meaning of joking, haven’t I?”

Gong Hua nodded his head. It meant interesting words were spoken for the fun for it and would not actually be executed. At the time, he hadn’t understood what ‘interesting’ meant. But now, looking at how Owen ran after Cas frenetically and the wailing expression on Cas’ face as he ran for his life…… Gong Hua seemed to gradually understand what ‘interesting’ meant.

Owen grabbed Cas’ head, grinding his fist on his skull, as the latter howled in pain. It was then that Gong Hua finally smiled, and laughter even erupted. Her laughs invigorated Owen, and he ground his fist with even more alacrity.

Upon hearing Gong Hua’s laughter, Mila, for once, was thankful for Owen’s childish temper and immature ways. She was close to calling out to root for Owen, but at the sight of Cas’ pitiful expression, she decided to simply smile and look on.

The group walked for an entire morning, before reaching the lake. The lake had a large surface area and in the farther reaches, a fog permeated its surface. With a gaze at it, one would find it impossible to see where the lake ended.

The lake is enveloped by forests on all four sides, suffusing the lake water with a light velvet green, where a reflection of the high mountains in the far ends could be seen. A few young fauna drank by the lake, seemingly unafraid of humans. They merely raised their heads, peering at them inquisitively.

As they rested their eyes on the resplendent scenery before them, the crowd could not help but gasp out in awe.

Gong Hua was the only person there who didn’t feel particularly different. Having lived most of his life under the Tree, Gong Hua found any scenery to be worth marveling at, not just the lake before him.
“What a beautiful lake!” With her gaze fixated on the sights before her, Mila asked, “Does this lake have a name?”

Cedric nodded and spoke, “The residents nearby call it the Moon Lake. It’s said that the lake will reflect a full moon at night.”

“But we can’t stay until the night.” Owen immediately chimed in. “There are too many beasts in this area, it’s too dangerous at night.”

“Such a pity……” Even though Mila said that, she would probably be the first one to object should they really stay for the night. For her, ensuring the two children’s safety preceded any beautiful scenery.
“We can go swimming!” Cas whooped ecstatically.

For a ten-year old child, swimming was more enticing than any dazzling landscape.

“I don’t allow it!” Owen immediately opposed to the idea.

Cas was surprised. Crumpling his face, he yelled indignantly, “Why?”

Cedric elucidated coldly, “This is one of the deeper regions of the forest, who knows what kind of animals there are in this lake. If you want to be eaten, then go ahead.”

Cas suckered his lips into a pout.

Just then, Gong Hua sprinted to the lake, and before anyone could stop him, he leapt into the water.
Even though the weather was warm, bordering on hot, the water is freezing cold. Gong Hua loved it immensely. It has been ages since he drank such fresh, delicious water.

Extremely dissatisfied, Cas pointed towards Gong Hua, raising his voice in protest, “Why can Gong Hua go in, while I can’t!”

Owen was speechless. Cedric glowered at his brother, “That’s because she’s of the Leaf Tribe, a child of the forest. But you’re not!”

Hearing his brother scold him, tears started to well up in Cas’ eyes.

At this, Mila pondered, and yelled to Gong Hua, who was still in the lake, “Gong Hua, can Cas come down to play with you? Will you be able to protect him?”

Doesn’t ‘play’ refer to climbing trees? Gong Hua was confused; he only came down to have his fill of fresh water. But he did understand it when Mila told him those words about protecting Cas. That was because flowers are born solely for the purpose of protecting the Leaf Tribe.

‘Protect’ is an instinct he didn’t need to learn. It’s just meant that his objects of protection included not only the Leaf Tribe, but also Owen and Mila. If so, another Cas wouldn’t hurt. So, he nodded his head in agreement.

Cas was close to leaping into the water immediately, but he still casted a hesitant look at his brother. It was only when Cedric nodded his head that he cheered loudly, “Hooray!” Without a moment’s hesitation, he stripped down to his underwear and ran to the lake in one breath, diving straight in. Massive sprays of water erupted from the surface, splashing Gong Hua’s entire face.

Cas could not get enough of it. He flashed a mischievous smile, and he directed waves of water towards Gong Hua with both his hands, splashing her.

“Cas! Stop fooling around……”

Staring down at the deep, unending depths of the lake, Cedric was extremely uneasy. He was close to calling his brother to get out of the lake but was halted by Mila. She smiled and said, “It’s okay, the kids are just having fun. Let them play to their hearts’ content.”

Owen also patted his shoulders and persuaded him, “Relax a little, we’re all here. It’ll be fine.”

“I just……” Cedric didn’t know how to get his point across and fell silent before he uttered solemnly, “Cas is all I have left.”

Owen took a deep breath and said, “You are also the only family Cas has left. Don’t always put on such a long face, and there’s no need to keep forcing him to practice his sword and Spiritual Vision.”

Cedric retorted angrily, “It’s most effective to practice Spiritual Vision during childhood. If he missed this opportunity, the chances of mastering it in future would be very low!”

Owen hurried on to explain, “I’m not telling you to not let him practice; I’m just saying that he needs rest, adequate rest! Oh right, I told you to carry along a map to explain to Gong Hua some basic common knowledge. Did you bring it?”

In the end, Owen thought it simpler to just shift the topic of conversation. He knows that Cedric’s family was pretty much wiped out. With his strong mindset for vengeance, it would be impossible to persuade him at the moment. There was no need to bicker with him in front of the kids.

It was known that he had spent considerable effort and even roped in his teammates to take turns convincing Cedric before Cedric finally agreed to bring Cas out for an outing. That is why he must not let this break end in hostility.

Cedric nodded his head and said, “I brought the map. I intend to explain this to Cas as well, so it’ll be easier to find the culprit later. From what I can see, the culprit is already out of this area.”

At this time, Mila’s furious yell travelled from not too far away, “You two, don’t just slack there, bring those items you’re holding and come here! Then, go and start the fire, gather firewood, and catch fish…… There’re so many things to do. Why aren’t you guys getting on with it?”

Owen pulled at Cedric and hollered, “Come on!”

The two children in the lake splashed each other, swam, and played to their hearts’ content. It was only at Mila’s command that they came ashore.

Mila took a couple towels, passing one to Cas, while she tried to dry Gong Hua’s hair. She recalled that Gong Hua’s hair was very sensitive, so she frantically stuffed the towel on top of her hands.

However, the Gong Hua was confused and questioned, “What’s the towel for?”

“It’s more comfortable if your hair is dry.”

Gong Hua shook his head and said, “It’s more comfortable when it’s wet.”

“Really? You like water? But you don’t seem to like bathing much but… cold water? You like cold water?” Halting her words in mid-sentence, Mila finally came to a realization.

Gong Hua nodded his head.

Mila understood. She shook her head and said, “Seriously, you could have just told me you like cold water! Why didn’t you mention it? I could have even saved the effort of heating the water! Then, just wipe yourself up slightly at the very least! If not, you’ll be dripping wet and it wouldn’t be good if the water drips onto the food.”

Gong Hua nodded. As Gong Hua continued drying himself, Cas had already tossed his towel aside. He ran to Owen’s side, exclaiming, “Smells good!”

Owen swelled with pride as he declared, “Of course, that’s because it’s Owen’s specialty roasted meat!”

“Isn’t this just normal meat?” Cedric grumbled. “And I roasted it, you’re merely responsible for starting the fire.”

“It takes skills to start a fire……”

Mila interrupted the conversation. “Is the meat ready? If it’s cooked, just put it on bread and let the kids have it first! They’ve been playing around for so long. They must be hungry.”

Subsequently, Gong Hua and Cas were each handed a piece of bread filled with meat. But, Gong Hua didn’t eat it and instead fell into thought. If she can tell the others that she doesn’t like hot water, then can she mention her dislikes for food as well?

Cas sputtered loudly while in the midst of chomping down his food, “Delicious! This is really delicious!”

At the sight of Cas, Mila and Owen broke into wide grins. Only Cedric shook his head at his own brother.

Upon seeing that Gong Hua hadn’t touched her food, Mila asked worriedly, “Gong Hua, aren’t you eating? Is it not to your liking?”

Seeing Mila and Owen’s smiles, Gong Hua took a bite without thinking and said, “Delicious…” It was only after Gong Hua finished saying it that he froze. He obviously didn’t find the meat delicious, yet he nodded his head…… why did he nod?

“Gong Hua?” Mila pulled the towel over and wiped Gong Hua’s neck as she beamed a smile, “Seriously, what’s on your mind? The gravy has already trickled down your neck.”

Gazing at Mila’s smile, Gong Hua suddenly felt that the bread truly was delicious. As long Mila and Owen smiled, anything would be delectable.

After the crowd ate to their fullest, Owen casted Cedric a sideways glance while Cedric carefully extracted a piece of hide and unveiled it on his thigh. The front side of the hide was composed of intricate designs and looked like a map.

Gong Hua asked curiously, “What is this?”

Cedric’s original motive was to explain anyways, so he did. “This is a map of Sisha. Sisha has three continents – Xi Zong, Xia Sha, and Jun De. Look, these two continents that only have a few regions connecting them, they’re Xi Zong and Xia Sha. Those two continents are separated by a gulf, named the Gulf of Zhan. To the south of Xi Zong and Xia Sha is the Sisha Sea, and below it is the Continent of Jun De.

Continent of Jun De…… Gong Hua froze, the name sounded rather familiar.

Cedric didn’t notice Gong Hua’s strange response and merely continued. “The continent we are on now is the Continent of Xi Zong. Our current position is on the middle right of the continent, which is also the end of the Xi Yang Mountains, near the centre of the Country of Zhan Yan. We’ll just have to cross the Xi Yang Mountains to get to the Country of Da Shi, which is just beside us.”

Even though Cedric said many things, Gong Hua could not understand a word of it. He asked, “What is Sisha?”

Upon hearing Gong Hua’s words, the group grew silent. Only Cas remarked, “That’s impossible, you don’t even know what Sisha is? Sisha is, is…… is here! Everything is in Sisha!”

Gong Hua stared at Cas, perplexed.

Cedric elucidated further, “Sisha is originally a word for the creation of spirits. Afterwards, it was used to refer to all matter in this world. No matter if it’s us, the earth we step on, or the sky, everything integrated as one is Sisha. Sisha is the whole of creation in this world.”

◎Fan Tong’s Afterword

Based on my experience earned from years of fortune-telling management, I can confidently say that this is a horrible start. Ah, this isn’t grand enough! Won’t you give me a bowl to drum-roll on? Alright, I know I’m asking for too much, since you guys don’t even have painkillers.
Even if I want to demand a bowl, I’d just end up asking for a wooden fish1, right? Story of my life.

You say my life ended already? That’s correct. Based on what I just saw and experienced, I have apparently died two times already, all on the same day. I’m not sure how I died in the original world, but I was clearly roasted to death this time.

Why did that beautiful boy choose to use fire? As deduced by my brilliant intelligence and wisdom, he must have been trying to lessen my pain. If a huge fireball doesn’t hurt, then a flame attack should be nothing. Is he really this considerate? Is human nature really this beautiful? Why do I suddenly feel super naive the more I think about this? There could be thousands to millions of reasons, but more than likely the real reason isn’t what I just said. Anyways, the past is past. I guess I’ll just optimistically face my future. Maybe I can still start a fortune-telling business in this world.

This world’s truly fascinating. Or should I say, confusing. My body grew back anew, similar to skin-shedding. As for what happened to my old body… it’s fine to leave that unmentioned. Okay, okay. I didn’t have the guts to look at it. I really don’t have a fetish for close inspection of my own corpse. Really!

Also, how kind of this pathway. Not only did it make me a new body, it didn’t forget to give me some clothes. Clothed in this world’s fashion, I can still have face to walk outside. Bravo, bravo.

While I climbed out of the passage’s exit, the person as beautiful as a goddess yet as cold-blooded as a witch walked up to me. She raised her right hand, her robes floated gently in the wind, and appeared exactly like a deity. With those elegant fingers, she waved a motion. I saw a

watermark-like

object diffusing, and… it appears I fainted, losing many, many fragments of my memory.

“Or more accurately, midway between my old life and the new…” — Fan Tong

.

.
Time: Midnight.
Location: Outside the Shen Yue pathway.
Situation: A bunch of people shooed away another bunch of people, then surrounded a half-dead person in panic.

Now that half-dead man is called Fan Tong, a New Resident who just arrived at this world. Logically speaking, he should’ve been safely transported to either the Eastern or Western City. Due to a tragic encounter with the flames of war, however, he confronted a fireball thrown by the Western soldiers. Until after the East ridded the West, Fan Tong was left lying in the same spot, sulking at his odd situation.

“Lord Luo Shi! Half his soul’s already separated from the body!”

“Lord Luo Shi! What should we do now? Should we heal him? Or should we just relieve him in one slash?”

Clustered by the questioning crowd was a beautiful youth, whose age still appeared to be quite young. He usually remained solemn in front of others, but at this moment, his body also expressed a rare case of distress.

Despite being the crowd’s leader, he also couldn’t settle on a decision.

While Luo Shi was troubled by this mental dilemma, Fan Tong was suffering from a physical dilemma. Ever since he was ridiculously warped to this world, he remained absolutely confused. First, he thought this was a dream but was then told he had died. Now it seemed he must die again?

He didn’t want to die, but no matter it be healing or death, either would still be superior to pausing in this so-tormenting-I-can-die-yet-cannot-die, bloody blur of a situation.

”If he died here, which Pond would his soul go to…” Luo Shi asked with a stiffened face. There really were no other New Residents who had just arrived and died unmanaged. Whether he would still float from the Pond was still uncertain, but if he flew to the Western City, didn’t that mean offering the rival a free gift? They were here to snatch the resource, not to clown around.

Although Fan Tong understood their language, he still couldn’t comprehend what they were saying, as he wasn’t prepped with the proper knowledge.

“Kill me…”

After laboriously squeezing the phrase out, Fan Tong accepted his fate and discovered that his mouth had betrayed him again.

He originally wanted to tell them not to kill him, but it became the opposite meaning. If he really died because of this, he’d definitely go dig out that woman who cursed him and take his revenge…

However, after some thoughtful consideration, running thousands of miles to find someone even after death sounds quite troublesome. Looks like it’d be better to contemplate on this matter some more.

“You…”

Luo Shi hesitated for a moment and started again with an unsure expression,

“You’re hurting that much?”

Nonsense! You can dare ask this question just because you’ve been pampered and spoiled your whole life and never got hit by a fireball!

Fan Tong roared inside; although setting a fireball experience as the criteria for being a spoiled person would cause too many people to fit the bill, he has no energy now to measure the logic of this thinking.

“It doesn’t hurt at all!”

That definitely wasn’t a show of endurance. It’s the curse acting up again.

Must you make conversation now? It’s wrong to talk, and it’s wrong to stay silent. Fan Tong sensed a waft of hopelessness and misery surmounting him.

Luo Shi’s gaze turned leery, probably because there was no way that wouldn’t hurt. Saying to kill him one second and saying it doesn’t hurt the next, this contradiction was not conceivable to him.

Fan Tong really wanted to ask these people. If they’re not killing or saving him, then aren’t there any painkillers they can give him? While he pondered on how to express his intentions correctly, Fan Tong noticed that everyone’s attitude suddenly became very respectful; they even parted a pathway. It seems another person came.

“Lord Ling Shi.”

That person headed towards Luo Shi. Lit by the exit’s light, the person’s appearance clearly surfaced as well, causing Fan Tong’s eyes to fixate in that direction.

A God… A Goddess? So this place really is heaven?

“Ling Shi, how should we deal with this…?”

Luo Shi compressed his lips and reluctantly asked for help. He was also the one who beckoned Ling Shi to come using the Communication Seal earlier. He felt a bit depressed about his inability to handle the situation and his need to rely on someone else.

Meanwhile, Ling Shi didn’t even use a moment’s hesitation before announcing his verdict.

“Toss him in the pathway and finish him. He can revive there.”

Fan Tong suddenly plunged into hell from heaven.

Not a goddess, but a witch?

“So the pathway has revival functions as well.”

Luo Shi sighed a breath of relief while clamping a seal on one hand and showing a “so it was this simple” expression.
Wait, wait a minute… Fan Tong’s eyes grew round like saucers and wanted to tell them to stop, but there was a ninety percent chance he’d end up saying “Faster!” or “Come get me!” or something. Although there was still that ten percent chance, would these people even pay attention to what he’s saying?

“Since you said even these injuries aren’t painful, then what’s coming next should be nothing.”

Luo Shi probably saw his horrified face and wanted to explain a bit to alleviate him.

But “not hurting” has been a misunderstanding since the start.

The lackeys on the side lifted Fan Tong’s body and tossed him into the passage before he could protest. Fan Tong sensed that these people were already treating him as a corpse. Before he died “this time”, Fan Tong saw Luo Shi holding, then tossing a piece of paper in the air before a fire-lit scroll danced towards his face in beautiful movements.

“Driven Fire!”

Considering the visual effect and heat burn, this wasn’t too different from the giant fireball. Days later, however, Fan Tong would discover that Driven Fire is merely the most basic attack in the book…

Although this may sound odd, but to commemorate his first death in this world, Fan Tong still hoped that he was killed by a dazzling, high-level finishing move. Anyone destined to die desires at least this much!

Yet, to be finished off by such a weak attack… that’s just implying he’ll always remain an extra in the story, impossible to ever turn a new page…

I thought I escaped from the cage.
Afterwards, I realized,
I had only stepped into a larger cage. No matter what I do, there’s no way to escape it.
This cage known as hatred.
– Gong Hua.

The Flower lumbered out of the mangled cage.

Still a little disoriented, he didn’t know where to go. However, he didn’t remain puzzled for long and began to stride forward slowly in the only direction he knew of… his home, the Tree.

He walked at a snail’s pace because of his unbearably bloated stomach. Earlier in his berserk rage, he consumed gobs and gobs of blood. As it was not water, he felt unaccustomed to it. He simply ate too much.

After walking for a while, there seemed to be a group of people catching up to him. The Flower halted his steps and turned around to look at them.

By then, the Flower had already recognized this race – Humans. These people rode on beasts. This was not the first time the Flower came across humans sitting atop of them. He once wondered why Humans would choose to ride beasts instead of walking themselves. After some observation, however, he more or less understood. Animals run faster than men, and some beasts can tow extremely hefty objects.

The men sitting on the beasts wore a thick layer of…“rock”. The Flower seldom saw anything like it and didn’t quite understand what it was. He could only treat it as rock for the time being.

Besides their garments, the men also waved in their hands “rocks” of different shapes.

Sparkling and pretty, those are probably decorations, the Flower thought.

The people leapt off their beasts and carefully approached Gong Hua. After reaching a certain proximity, they surrounded the Flower and raised the rocks in their hands, pointing it towards him.

The Flower cocked his head and stared. He imagined that these men must want to cage him again.

One human slowly walked into the barricade. Mesmerized by his movements, the Flower gazed directly at him. That man walked towards the Flower’s front and stopped about three steps away.

The man was quite tall, and the Flower had to arch his head to look at his face. That man also lowered his head to return the gaze. For a while, there was no movement. Then, the man suddenly retracted the glistening stone he held in his hand and untied the enormous object slung over his shoulder.

The Flower recognized this object. Humans are always wrapped in it. Except, this object looked different on every individual human, just like the varying petals on different flowers.

It was then that the Flower suddenly recalled. The Leaf Tribe also used objects to wrap themselves, but what they used were various tree leaves, fur or feathers. They would fasten a vine at the waist and occasionally hang flowers or pretty stones.

However, the objects wrapped around the humans were not leaves. The Flower didn’t know what these things were called and could only refer to them as petals.

Just then, the man slung that huge “petal” over the Flower’s body and carefully tied a knot. He even inspected it meticulously to make sure the petal was secure and wouldn’t slide off.

The Flower was amazed. It felt soft, indeed like a petal. It might be a petal from a flower he has not seen before.

However, even if this object really is a petal, a flower wouldn’t exchange petals with another. Thus, the Flower didn’t understand why that Human would drape his petal over his body.

The human opened his mouth now and sputtered a chain of sounds. However, the Flower could not understand them and so only continued to stroke the “petal” on his body. He really liked the touch of this petal.

Witnessing this, the man scratched his head, seemingly perplexed. Then, he stretched his hand and pointed at himself, continuously uttering a string of words, “Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin, Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin……”

The Flower finally understood, this man is Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin.

“Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin,” the Flower carefully enunciated the Human’s name. He mimicked the man’s action and pointed to himself saying “Flower” in the Leaf Tribe’s language. After he finished, he thought for a moment and further explained, “Male Flower.”1

Destined to be abandoned since birth, the Flower has not been given a name. The only thing he has left is his identity and gender.

The way to differentiate a Flower’s gender vastly differs from other species. On appearance alone, males and females look about the same. Neither of them have sex organs or nipples. Other than the strands on their heads, not a hair exists.

However, the female’s physique is generally stronger than the male, as she holds the responsibility of raising children.

Nature has always worked in this way. Giving birth to offspring is vital. Hence the reproducing female needs to be the stronger gender.

That Human, Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin, furrowed his brow and tried to pronounce the same words the Flower spoke. “Gong Hua?”2

The Flower tilted his head, yet he did not deny the way that man addressed him. He understood that the other party’s language is different and pronouncing the name in the exact tone would be difficult. The “Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin” he uttered may not have been the correct pronunciation either.

Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin spoke again. Upon noticing a lack of response, he simply lifted the Flower and walked to the beast he previously sat on.

The Flower was startled. When Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin sat him on the beast’s back, he started to caress the beast out of curiosity. Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin also followed suit, as he jumped on the beast’s back and started to caress it. He then pulled on its rein, so that the beast would start running.

The Flower turned to sense the Tree’s location. Only then did he realize that the beast was taking him in a completely different direction. He turned towards Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin, and the latter smiled. He said a word Gong Hua didn’t understand and then uttered “Gong Hua.”

Because of Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin’s smile and the apparent kindness he emanated, the Flower did not jump off the beast. Gong Hua was a flower that has been left alone for fifty years; between a smile and a lifeless Tree without Leaves, the former appeared much more attractive.

The beast dashed at blazing speed, and it wasn’t long before the Flower realized he again returned to that small town, the town he obliterated.

A pungent, rusty smell wafted in the air. That smell formerly made the Flower feel so bloated he wanted to retch. The only difference now was that a rotting stench also hung about. The Flower could not stand it anymore. He leapt off the galloping animal. Momentum soon propelled him across the ground, forcing him to tumble for a few revolutions.

Once he stopped rolling, he knelt on the roadside and started to gag. But, nothing came out. The blood, consumed days before, can no longer be vomited.

Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin walked behind the Flower. He was muddled; for a second, he didn’t know what to do. After inspecting the Flower’s four limbs and making sure there were no grave injuries, he gently patted the Flower’s back. He hoped that would make him feel better.

The Flower certainly felt better. He stopped hurling and turned back to look at Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin. He hoped that man would smile at him.

He didn’t smile. The man stared at the Flower with his brows creased into a frown, worried. However, the Flower still felt unexpectedly comforted after staring at that expression.

When he saw that the Flower was no longer vomiting, Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin once again lifted the Flower and strode forward with large steps.

Just then, the Flower finally turned his attention to his surroundings. A lot more people had appeared in the town’s vicinity, as well as more triangular objects.

There have been many of such triangular objects in the circus. Every time the circus relocated, the first thing done was the setting up of these triangular objects. There were gigantic ones big enough to allow crowds to squirm within, and there were smaller ones with only enough space for a cage to enclose him, allowing only a few individuals to enter at a time to gawk at him.

The Flower took a long time to understand that the Humans use these triangular objects as mobile homes. Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin brought him into a tiny triangle, which was so small it wouldn’t be able to fit even the cage that once enclosed the Flower. When they entered, there was already a person present. Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin exchanged a few words with that person before he placed the Flower on the floor, smiling at him before leaving.

The Flower watched Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin leave and his heart sank a bit. He felt upset; even though this wasn’t the first time he was left behind.

Just then, the person who remained suddenly stroked the Flower’s head. When the Flower spun around, the person pointed to herself just like Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin and continuously reiterated, “Mila”.

Afterwards, she would point to the Flower voicing, “Gong Hua,” before pointing to herself again saying, “Mila.”

The Flower understood. This person wanted him to call out her name. The Flower pointed his finger towards the human and said, “Mila.”

After he finished, that person revealed a candescent smile. Upon seeing her smile, the Flower followed suit.

At this moment, two men emerged from outside, hauling a barrel filled to the brim with water. They placed it down and subsequently left.

Mila brought the Flower to the barrel. She ran her fingers through the water, making ripples on its surface.

The Flower was confused. Does Mila want him to drink the water? But, he had eaten too much a few days back and did not have appetite for anything. Moreover, he didn’t like steaming water and has even less need for such a big barrel of it. This barrel could conceal him completely.

Mila shoved the Flower and pointed to the barrel.

The Flower understood slightly. Does Mila want him to enter the barrel?

The Flower disliked hot water, yet he did not wish to see Mila disappointed. She smiled at him. Thus, he stepped into the barrel. The moment his feet dove into the water, Mila pushed his shoulders down, sitting him. This action caused the water to rise past his shoulders.

Mila took off the big petal draped on the Flower’s body and held a small petal, grinning as she wiped the Flower’s face with it. She then pushed the petal into the Flower’s hands.

The Flower could somewhat understand her action. After Mila used the tiny petal to wipe his face, the foul odor somewhat faded……. It appeared that the combination of water and a tiny petal can remove the stench on his body.

Once he understood this point, he immediately used the tiny petal to scrub his hair, where it reeked the most.

Upon observing the Flower’s actions, Mila knew he understood. Smiling broadly, she started to walk out.

The moment the Flower saw Mila leaving, he immediately halted his wiping and shouted, “Mila!”

Mila spun around, staring at him curiously, with a smile still plastered across her face. At that point, the Flower began to understand. No matter if it’s Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin or Mila, they have not abandoned him. They were only leaving for the time being.

Mila walked to the side of the barrel and caressed the Flower’s head, murmuring incessantly. Although she should know that the Flower wouldn’t understand, she still talked to him for a long while with a gentle tone before leaving.

Understanding that Mila and Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin would return, the Flower felt assured and continued to scrub his body with the petal. The hot water felt less annoying now.

Not long after, Mila indeed returned, holding a stack of petals. She pushed those petals to the Flower and uttered a few words.

The Flower stared at the petals, then raised his head towards Mila.

Mila spoke again, spread the petals, and pointed to herself. With no reaction from the Flower, she smiled a constrained smile. She put on the petals piece by piece then took them off, demonstrating the action to the Flower repeatedly with utmost patience.

The Flower stared at Mila’s actions with immense curiosity. Mila ceaselessly put on and peeled off the pieces of petals. She wore two small petals first, attaching each to the upper and lower body. She then grasped a large petal, putting it on headfirst then wrapping herself completely from neck to knee.

The Flower understood. He stood up, wanting to try wearing these soft petals as well. However, before he could take those petals, Mila turned to grab another large petal and began to wipe his damp body.

That petal sponged away the water beads on his body. By then, Mila has also pulled the Flower’s whole body out of the barrel. Mila grinned at him before stuffing petals into the Flower’s arms. She then turned around with her back facing the Flower.

The Flower imitated Mila’s movements and wore the petals one by one. He first attempted the small white petal, which had two holes for him to poke his legs through; he pulled that to his waist. He then slipped his head through a slightly larger white petal and stretched his arms out of the two holes on the side. The largest blue petal came last; he also slipped his head through it and cast his out his arms. The only difference between this blue petal and the white one was that this is much larger, covering the Flower to his knees.

After putting on his clothes, the Flower immediately tugged on Mila’s arm excitedly. He wanted Mila to see him with his petals on.

Mila turned around, smiling as she caressed the Flower’s head. The Flower recoiled immediately. The action was too intimate and made him feel slightly embarrassed.

Yells traveled from outside the triangle. The Flower heard them. Mila heard them as well. The latter hollered back towards the sound, and Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin subsequently walked in. He was dazed upon seeing the Flower and soon broke into a smile.

The Flower mimicked him, widening the corners of his lips to reveal a huge grin. This made Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin smile even more, from ear to ear. He walked forward and stuffed a soft, downy object onto the Flower. Its color resembled that of soil.

The Flower took it and sniffed, discovering it aromatic and soft. The Flower suspected that this could possibly be a petal as well? However, he never saw a petal colored soil and was thus fascinated by it.

Mila and Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin started to converse, but the Flower could not understand their words. All he could do was play with the soil-colored petal by himself.

Mila turned her head around, and grabbed the petal with one hand, before tearing off a piece of it.

“Ah!” The Flower was stupefied. The petal was actually torn!

Mila stuffed the torn fragment into the Flower’s mouth. This startled him even more. He held it in his mouth, confused about why Mila would stuff a petal into his mouth.

Mila smiled and turned back to talk to Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin.

Amidst listening to Mila talk, he recognized a familiar sound, Owen…… but only “Owen”. Mila did not mention “Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin”.

“Owen?” The Flower glanced at Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin, puzzled. Is he called “Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin” or is it simply “Owen”?

Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin heard the Flower. He spun around and answered with a smile, “Gong Hua..”

He also mentioned something else after his name, but the Flower couldn’t understand. He pointed at Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin and asked, “Owen?”

“Owen.”

The Flower repeated it. He preferred Owen to Zhan∙Owen∙Paladin, as it was shorter. In contrast, Owen liked to call him “Gong Hua” instead of just “Hua”.

How weird, Owen actually preferred longer names. But that doesn’t matter, as long as he likes it.

“Gong Hua,” the Flower nodded. He would always remember his new name – Gong Hua.

Owen beamed a bright smile at Gong Hua and resumed his conversation with Mila.

During this time, the two people sneaked glances at Gong Hua while they spoke, but the latter was oblivious to it. His paid full attention to the petals on his hand and body and constantly played with them. He even discovered that these two different petals were actually worlds apart.

Occasionally, he would raise his head out of curiosity to peek at Owen and Mila. If their eyes met, Owen or Mila would smile at him. This incited him to raise his head more regularly. He anticipated the next time their gazes would meet and the smiles that would follow.

However, the two soon finished their discussion. Owen flashed another smile at Gong Hua before leaving.

Mila turned around, stretching her hand to tear a piece off the petal in Gong Hua’s hand. This she stuffed into Gong Hua’s mouth while smiling at him. She uttered a few words to him then followed Owen out of the tent.

After Mila exited, Gong Hua spat out all the petals in his mouth. He checked the direction of the Tree again but still doesn’t want to leave. Compared to the Tree without Leaves, he preferred to stay with Owen and Mila.

And with his stay, a month soon passed.

All this time, Gong Hua and Mila stayed together. Often times, Mila would teach Gong Hua a little of the Human language and, at the same time, be surprised to find out about his exceptional memory. As long as she said it once, no matter how insignificant, Gong Hua would remember it.

In only a month, Gong Hua could almost name every item in the Human language. However, he still struggled with sentence structures.

Sometimes, Owen also visited the Flower, but he seemed busy and always left as quickly as he came. Even then, he never forgot to bring little gifts for Gong Hua. Most of the time, they were tidbits and sweets. However, Gong Hua never ate them. He stored these objects in a bag Mila gave him and would occasionally take them out for a whiff.

Gong Hua may not eat them, but he enjoyed the fragrance these sweets emanated.

Mila still brought him those soil-colored petals every day. No! It is “bread”. He now knew that the object was called bread. Bread is actually a type of plant seed ground into powder, then baked into a type of product for consumption. It served as staple food for the humans.

At first, Gong Hua adamantly refused to eat the bread. After a few days, however, Mila’s face crumpled with worry as she handed him the bread. Tears then begin to well up in her eyes when Gong Hua doesn’t eat.

At the sight of Mila’s tears, Gong Hua eventually bit down on the bread and reluctantly swallowed it. Mila was then able to smile through her tears. However, only after he finished the entire bread did she feel relieved enough to leave.

The moment Mila left, Gong Hua immediately ran to an isolated corner and vomited everything. His stomach could not digest it. Despite having to force himself to eat and vomit two meals every day; despite having to stay near the town he wrecked havoc in; despite having to tolerate the putrid stench still penetrating the air even now.

He still didn’t want to leave.

“Gong Hua?”

Gong Hua spun around as Mila frantically rushed over. Upon seeing him vomit all over the floor, she panicked and was on the verge of crying.

Concerned, Mila lightly patted Gong Hua’s back and asked, “What is it? Is your stomach upset from the bread?”

Gong Hua shook his head.

“You don’t like eating bread?” Mila asked hesitantly.

Gong Hua still shook his head. He only drinks water. Naturally, he would dislike bread.

Mila knitted her brows, but upon seeing Gong Hua’s stare, she quickly smiled and said, “Okay, I’ll bring you other food tomorrow?”

Gong Hua still shook his head. He only drinks water.

The following day, Mila brought a bowl of soup filled with meat and vegetables instead… However, her blanket of long hair disappeared.

Gong Hua stared at her head dumbfounded. Mila initially had long curls the color resembling that of sunflowers; they were extremely vibrant. Whenever he followed Mila around, humans always fixated their gazes on her hair.

“Come, drink some soup.” Mila wore a bright smile and passed the bowl to him.

Gong Hua received the bowl and stayed silent for a moment. For the first time, he started to eat things without vomiting.

After Mila coaxed Gong Hua to sleep, she could not help but turn back a few times, burdened with worry. Confirming that Gong Hua is laying well in his bed, she finally peeled open the tent door and walked out. She only took one step before abruptly colliding with a black figure. Startled, she stepped back. She began to recognize the person she bumped into. She breathed a sigh of relief, murmuring, “Owen.”

“How is Gong Hua?” Owen stepped forward, feeling a little pained as he glanced at Mila’s hair. He asked again, “Has she eaten?”6

Mila nodded her head and informed him. “She finally ate something and didn’t vomit this time.”

“That’s good.” Owen frowned with his eyes fixed on the tent. “Such a worrisome child.”

“You’re really that worried?” Mila chuckled as she spoke, “At first, you kept nagging me, saying I was too fond of the child, I can’t do this, I can’t raise every orphan I find, can I? My ears nearly grew calluses from your incessant bugging.”

“That…” Rendered speechless, Owen couldn’t explain even after pondering for half the day. He only scratched his head and said, “Even if I don’t raise her to adulthood, I can’t actually let her starve to death.”

“If you like the child, say it. Why can’t you just admit it?”

Mila rolled her eyes, and seeing how Owen awkwardly stiffened, she interrogated him no further. She only turned her gaze towards the tent Gong Hua slept in and sighed, “That child is really different. She has nothing, can’t speak, yet doesn’t make a fuss. It’s as if she doesn’t want anything.”

Mila intentionally casted a sideways glance at Owen and mumbled bitterly, “Of course. There’s nothing odd about you liking Gong Hua. She has delicate features and is a very attractive girl.”

“What nonsense are you talking about?” Owen panicked and spluttered. “Gong Hua is still a child. I saw it clearly that day. Her chest hasn’t even developed…”

“You saw it clearly that day? Hm?” Mila narrowed her eyes to menacing slits.

Owen’s jaw dropped as he frantically tried to condone himself. “She, she didn’t wear anything that day! Even then, my eyes didn’t roam anywhere! Moreover, her hair covered most of her body, and you obviously know, I, I… the person I like is you! We have, for so long… Mila, you have to trust me!”

Idiot! Mila burst out laughing and said in her fits, “There, there! I was just joking.”

“You shouldn’t even joke about something like this!” Owen spoke, feeling a little wronged. “It’s not like I’m some pedophile, why would I like Gong Hua? She’s younger than me by at least fifteen years!”

Mila shook her head grinning and explained. “Gong Hua is certainly not a child, but probably just born with a small chest. She looks about fifteen or sixteen, only younger than you by about ten years!”

“Sixteen? Doesn’t that make her an adult?” Owen’s mouth gaped wide open, completely unable to conceive it. He asked, “That can’t be, can it? Her, her figure looks about twelve… Arghh! I only took a small glance.”

Mila shot him a disdainful look and muttered, “It’s because you’re too tall, so you didn’t notice that Gong Hua is actually taller than me. I measured her height, and it’s 170 cm! How can that be the height of a twelve year old?”

“That tall?” Owen was blown away by surprise. “There are girls that tall?” According to his impression of women, girls are all supposed to be small and petite.

After hearing his words, Mila hesitated. She has seen Gong Hua naked, although never precisely. The mass of hair always cloaked over the body as well. However, it seemed that that child doesn’t have nipples… Nonetheless, these things aren’t appropriate to mention to a man. Mila simply could not muster the courage to discuss nipple problems with him.

“No matter what, that child is simply too odd.” Mila said distraught with worry, “Look at her. In the beginning, she couldn’t even speak!”

“She could be suffering from a trauma,” Owen explained. “There are many people scared into aberration upon witnessing frightening events. Not to mention, this town’s been reduced to a bloodbath! Gong Hua’s entire body was soaked with blood. She probably witnessed the entire massacre.”

Upon hearing Owen’s explanation, Mila fell silent. She was not an easily frightened person. As military personnel following the army, witnessing blood scenes were not uncommon. But, this town could not simply be described as a bloodbath. It was completely decimated; the infrastructure was reduced to rubble, and there were even houses half buried in the ground.

Despite mobilizing a team of thirty people and a month of excavation, corpses could still be dug out from depths deep of the earth.

What exactly happened in this town?

Is it a natural disaster? An earthquake?

An earthquake would be the most plausible explanation right now, but anyone who’s seen the remains would feel that something is amiss. Half of the houses were embedded in the ground, and many people were encased in deep soil instead of rubble. The ground surface was inexplicably flat, scarred with longitudinal marks. It was if some enormous, elongated creature crawled through.

Everyone who passed by this town couldn’t accept earthquake as the explanation. However, no one could offer any alternative insight.

This place lies neither near water nor mountains. Hence, it could not possibly be a flood or a landslide. Other than an earthquake, what other plausible explanation could there be? Is there even “anything” that can bring about such destruction?

Mila felt a chill down her spine. If the “natural disaster” were to befall once more, can the team withstand it? She couldn’t help but tremble at the thought.

“Don’t be afraid, you still have me, unless I die.” Owen picked up on Mila’s emotions and squeezed her hands lightly. His thick, callused hands comforted her, although Owen’s words made her so embarrassed she hid her face by looking at the floor.

Behind them, another hand also emerged, startling the two of them. They simultaneously turned around, then broke out into smiles.

It was Gong Hua!

They had no idea when Gong Hua started standing behind them. He had even latched his hands on theirs. His expression was somber, as if this was a solemn ceremony.

Mila grabbed Gong Hua’s hand and chided, “Gong Hua, why haven’t you slept yet?”

Hearing Mila’s words, Gong Hua raised his head and replied honestly, “I was listening to your conversation.”

“Ah…” Mila said a little apologetically. “I’m really sorry. We shouldn’t have talked outside the tent. The noise must have woken you up.”

Gong Hua shook his head to show he didn’t mind. He then asked curiously, “Owen, Mila, why do you put your hands together?”

The moment he posed the question, Owen and Mila exchanged quick glances. However, they shifted away again when the eyes met, their faces turning pink.

“Mila, your face is red.” After Gong Hua finished saying that, he instantly discovered something new and exclaimed, “Owen, your face is red too! Why do faces turn red?”

Mila’s face flushed even harder at Gong Hua’s words. In turn, Owen cleared his throat loudly and raised his voice, “Seriously! Kids shouldn’t ask so much. Go to sleep, quickly! Be good, and I’ll bring you out to play tomorrow.”

Go out and play? Gong Hua could not fully comprehend the meaning of ‘play’, but he understood that it meant Owen would come visit him tomorrow. He immediately spun around and asked, “Would Mila come and play too?”

“This…” Mila hesitated. Owen is the team leader, so no one would question him no matter where he went. On the other hand, she is merely military personnel. It’d be really impertinent of her to take leave without permission.

Owen hurriedly declared, “I’m the leader. I’ll let you go on leave… Don’t glare at me! I know you care about what others say, but we haven’t taken rest for so long. Everyone knows you’re serious in your work. They won’t disapprove!”

Mila looked daggers at Owen, yet as she saw Gong Hua’s eyes filled with anticipation, she couldn’t help but soften her heart and agree.

“Okay! It’s only right that we accompany Gong Hua to play. She’s still a child after all! Staying at this kind of place from dawn to dusk wouldn’t be good for her…”

While speaking, Mila also forgot that she just corrected Owen about how Gong Hua should be sixteen now and how she is not a child. Despite saying this, she still treated Gong Hua as a child herself. This is because Gong Hua has just learned how to speak, and her words all sound like a child’s. Even her actions and manners looked childish, thus no matter her age, Mila could not bring herself to treat Gong Hua as an adult.

“Never go close to town,” Owen reminded Gong Hua. “I’ve told you this many times. Did you obey them?”

Gong Hua nodded his head. He has no desire to step foot near that place. Even though the putrid stench has faded away considerably, the smell still stung. This smell reminded him of the terrifying screams and that rusty, salty stench of blood. He dreaded those memories. So even if Owen didn’t mention it, there’s no way he would go close to the town.

“There’s a lake nearby. Do you want to go there for a picnic?”

Owen and Mila started to discuss their outing’s venue for tomorrow. To be honest, there’s really nothing in the vicinity that can be considered fun. The bustling cities were all miles away, and there’s no way they could travel that far.

“Would it be dangerous?” Mila was concerned. “There seems to be many wild beasts in this area.”

“It shouldn’t be. Many members went there before. Even if it’s dangerous, there’s still me!” Owen thumped his chest as affirmation. “I’m a ‘Spiritmancer’, you know! I’ve cleared five levels of Unchain!”

“What is a spiritmancer-you-know?” Gong Hua immediately questioned, as he pretty much understood nothing. It was exhilarating to make new discoveries every day.

Owen corrected him. “It’s not spiritmancer-you-know, it’s ‘Spiritmancer’. Aye! You still can’t differentiate between ‘you know’, ‘is it’ and ‘yeah’ , can you?3 Anyways, a Spiritmancer is a very powerful person, and his greatest strength lies in his ability crush ‘souls’ using Unchain.” We can make the opponent fall in one slash! Your big bro Owen here is a powerful Spiritmancer, you know!”

“Don’t listen to “Uncle” Owen’s nonsense. A Spiritmancer is just a type of battle occupation!” Mila sighed. She pushed Gong Hua to the tent while saying, “Okay! It’s late now. Gong Hua, you should go to sleep!”

Gong Hua was completely baffled. Spirit? Spiritmancer? Unchain? Battle? Occupation? He actually wanted to continue with his questions. But when Mila deepens her tone, there is no way to refute it. He can only obediently do as she says.

“I’ll explain tomorrow,” Owen winked at Gong Hua.

Gong Hua grinned and nodded. With Owen’s reassuring words, he was finally willing to return to his tent and sleep. Behind him, he could still hear Mila chiding Owen.

“You! Don’t explain so many battle terms to a little girl!”

“I rarely get a chance to show off! It won’t hurt just to let me get a feeling of it… Okay, okay! Stop pulling my ear! I promise not to reveal anything horrifying! Arrgh, it hurts!”

While listening to Owen and Mila’s voices, Gong Hua obediently laid on his mattress, thinking of tomorrow and where they will “play.” Even though he didn’t quite understand what “play” meant, knowing that Owen and Mila will accompany him was enough…

Without realizing it, Gong Hua soon drifted off to sleep. In his dream, there were trees, leaves, as well as Owen and Mila.

The moment Gong Hua woke up next morning, Mila hurried him to wash and dress. After he finished, he was forced to sit on a chair, instantly stuffed with a piece of bread for breakfast.

While Gong Hua gnawed at the bread, Mila grabbed his hair in one hand… He sprang up immediately as his hair strands struggled to break away from Mila’s clutches.

Gong Hua firmly shielded his hair with both hands. He was so embarrassed that his entire face went beet red.

Mila held onto the comb, her body frozen. She knew there was something weird about Gong Hua, like that nipple problem, but who would’ve thought that even hair could be an issue!

She had already felt that something was amiss while clutching Gong Hua’s hair earlier. Upon touch, that cluster of black didn’t feel like the texture of human hair at all. She was unable to describe how it felt; it was soft, yet not as fine as human hair. Moreover… did those hair strands just move by themselves?

“Gong Hua, your hair…” Mila’s voice sounded odd. “Can it move by itself?”

Gong Hua nodded his head.

Mila sucked in her breath and couldn’t respond momentarily. She breathed deeply a few times, forcing herself to calm down. She was then able to part her lips and murmur, “Can you make it move a little?”

The moment Mila finished, she saw Gong Hua’s hair starting to float. She had to quickly clasp her mouth to prevent an outcry escape from her lips.

Who are you… No, Gong Hua, “what” are you?

Just then, Gong Hua suddenly spoke, “Mila, are we going to play? Is Owen coming?”

“Huh?”

The flustered Mila couldn’t listen to Gong Hua clearly and only turned instinctively to look at him. That one look settled Mila’s wave of emotions.

In her eyes, Gong Hua is but a little girl, but in fact, Gong Hua’s actions are more innocent and pure than ordinary girls, like those of children under ten. What could be so scary about a girl like that?

Mila grinned and nodded in response, “Mm, we’re going out to play. We just have to wait for Owen to come find us.”

Gong Hua was delighted, smiling from ear to ear as he nodded his head.

Seeing his smile, Mila felt more relieved. She even started believing that moving hair isn’t all that abnormal. After all, the “Sisha”4 houses so many tribes. It wouldn’t be strange if there were people who can move their hair.

Despite that, Mila still carefully instructed, “Gong Hua, can you stop your hair from drifting about? It doesn’t matter if it’s blown by wind, but you mustn’t make it float on its own, all right? Everyones’ hair can’t move. If yours does, people will realize that you’re different from them.”

Gong Hua nodded his head obediently. At the same time, he halted the movements of his hair, letting it fall naturally.

Seeing Gong Hua’s reaction finally put Mila’s mind at ease. Even if she could accept Gong Hua’s oddity, it doesn’t mean everyone can. To avoid invoking fear amongst others, it would be best if no one realizes it.

“Come, I’ll brush your hair,” she beckoned towards Gong Hua.

Gong Hua shook his head, face red again, while shielding his hair.

Mila was dumbfounded. In that moment, she realized something abnormal about Gong Hua’s reaction, and came to a rather embarrassing thought. She hesitated, then asked with a red face , “Gong Hua, when I touch your hair, do you feel something?”

“Yes, it’s ticklish, a weird feeling…” Gong Hua muttered softly.

“So-sorry,” Mila said sheepishly. “Then, then you’ll brush your hair yourself! This hair band is for you to tie your hair. This means you gather your hair to the back of your head, then make a pretty butterfly knot around it…” While she rattled on, she held a brush and hair band, clumsily demonstrating the action to Gong Hua.

Gong Hua nodded his head and took the hair band. He placed this on a tiny strand of hair, which twirled itself around the band and brought it onto the back of his head. Subsequently, all his hair, without a strand less, floated to the back, allowing itself to be tied by the hair band. Finally, the band was evenly tied into a pretty butterfly knot. The process, from start to finish, had not required the use of hands and was done entirely by hair.

What a convenient way of tidying hair. Mila was speechless.

She breathed in and cautioned once again, “Gong Hua, if there’s anyone around, don’t let your hair move about no matter what. Do you understand?”

Gong Hua thought for a moment then asked, “Can I let Owen see this?”

“Not yet. I’ll let him know in a few days…”

Before Mila could finish, Owen’s loud bellows travelled in from outside the tent, “Mila! Are you guys ready?”

“Ah!” Mila suddenly remembered that she herself had not tidied her appearance yet! She blurted in a hurry, “Gong Hua, go out and talk to Owen first. I must brush my hair first as well.”

“Okay.”

Gong Hua agreed. As he stepped out of the tent, he found two other males standing outside.

One short, one tall. Both shared gentle features, but the taller man seemed more reliable than the other. This obviously has something to do with age. The shorter guy seemed like a child and looked even younger than Gong Hua, probably only ten or twelve years old.

They should both be “male” right?

Gong Hua can generally differentiate between Human men and women now. But, he has no idea whether he is considered a male or a female. Since Human women can reproduce, then Mu Hua, the Flowers who give birth, should also be females. However, Human male bodies held more physical prowess than women. This contrasts with Flowers, whose females are usually stronger! Does that mean human males are the same as Mu Hua?

Gong Hua cannot comprehend at all. Hence, whenever he found himself wearing a skirt, which is a female garment, he didn’t request for a change of clothing. He simply has no idea whether he’s a girl or a boy and so he doesn’t know if he should be wearing skirts or shorts. It’s just that he prefers wearing skirts, as they resemble petals more.

Just then, Owen stretched out his hand and gave the man beside him a loud pat on the shoulder. He said, “Gong Hua, let me introduce everyone. This is my team’s only Spirit Charmer, Zhan • Cedric Tershiziel. The one beside him is his younger brother, Zhan • Cas • Tershiziel.”

“Such long names.” Gong Hua felt troubled. Owen and Mila sounded much better.

“Zhan • Owen • Paladin isn’t that short either!” Cas raised his voice in protest. “What’s your full name?”

After hearing Cas’ words, Owen and Cedric’s faces changed color. They both know that Gong Hua had trouble even speaking properly. He has also never mentioned his full name. It probably too traumatized to remember.

“What’s a full name?” Gong Hua didn’t understand. Mila told him before that it’s okay to ask questions if he doesn’t understand.

“A full name is your whole name!” Cas said as a matter-of-factly. “The first cword of your country’s name, followed by your first name and surname!”

“What’s country’s name and surname?” Even though Cas answered his question, he remained confused.

Cas glared straight at him and scowled, “Why don’t you know anything? Your country’s name is what you call the place you were born in. You’re a citizen of Zhan Yan5, aren’t you? Then, the first word of your full name should be Zhan, then Gong Hua, followed by your surname. A surname is… simply a surname! Your father’s surname is your surname!”

“Cas, quiet!” Cedric bellowed at him furiously. “Did you forget what I told you?”

Cas froze. Just then did he recalled his brother’s instructions regarding Gong Hua. Gong Hua cannot remember anything, so it’s crucial that no one asks him about his past. Upon recollection, Cas immediately sealed his mouth shut, albeit a little too late.

Owen consoled Gong Hua nervously, “Gong Hua, it’s okay if you don’t remember your full name. It’ll come to you someday, so take your time to remember…”

Suddenly, Gong Hua blurted out, “Leaf • Gong Hua • Tree.”

“What?” Owen was stunned.

“My full name is Leaf • Gong Hua • Tree.”

Gong Hua racked his brains to think of this. The country he lived in… He only knew that he lived together with the Leaf Tribe, so it should be Leaf, right? And if his father’s surname is his own… since he was born from a tree, it is his mother as well as father. Since a tree is only called Tree, that should naturally be his surname.

“Leaf? You’re lying!” Cas immediately forgot his brother’s warning again and roared, “There’s no country like that! The Continent of Xi Zong only consists of our country, Zhan Yan, the western side’s Yi Xiang, the midland’s Lin Feng, and the eastern front’s Da Shi. Everyone’s names should start with Zhan, Xiang, Feng, or Shi.”

“Leaf?” Cedric, in turn, was dumbfounded and exclaimed, “Could you be from the Leaf Tribe?”

“I am a Flower.” Gong Hua thought for a bit and added, “Leaf Tribe’s Flower.”

“Flower?” Cedric’s was confused. It wasn’t that surprising to him though, as he held minimal knowledge in the first place.

Leaf Tribes in Xi Zong are extremely rare and never associates with the outside world. Already unusual to come across this species in the first place, the only sparse information Humans could obtain is rumors, rumors on how everyone in a leaf tribe is beautiful, kind hearted, etc. However, getting into specifics would be impossible.”

After looking around and ensuring no one else is nearby, Cedric whispered, “In short, you belong to the Leaf Tribe, right?”

The moment Gong Hua nodded his head, Cedric’s expression fell heavy.

“Okay, I’ve kept you waiting.”

Mila flipped open the tent door and rushed out briskly. The instant she walked out, she noticed the odd expressions on everyone’s faces. She couldn’t help but suspect that Gong Hua’s abnormality has been discovered. Frantically she questioned, “What is it?”

Owen scratched his head and said, “I’m not too sure myself, Gong Hua seems to, seems to not be of the Human Tribe… “

Mila froze. The matter seemed more serious than she thought.

Just then, Cedric abruptly turned to the two of them and said, “Mila, Owen, let’s go over to the side and talk for a while, shall we? Cas, chatted with Gong Hua first… I’m warning you, you’re not allowed to mention anything about the Leaf Tribe, and you’re also forbidden from bullying her, understand?”

Cas stared at his brother’s expression and understood the gravity of this warning. He nodded his head vigorously. As a sign of making peace, he even took the initiative to clasp Gong Hua’s hand.

Cedric dragged Owen and Mila to the side without a moment’s hesitation. The other two were all question marks. They only stared at Cedric to wait for his explanation.

Cedric fixed his gaze on the two people, his tone somber as he spoke, “Owen, Mila, the Leaf Tribe is very valuable. Especially since rumors a while back told of the Leaf Tribe’s relocation to another continent, none of them remain on this continent anymore. If you brought Gong Hua to an auction, you could sell him at an unbelievably high price…”

1Male Flower (公花): It’s pronounced Gong Hua. 公 (Male/Father/Husband) and 花 (Flower). When Gong Hua refers to himself, he calls himself “Flower” (Hua 花).

2Gong Hua (公華): The exact meaning of this name is unclear. So far we know it is a mispronunciation by Owen.

3The actual words used are 喔 (wo), 嗎 (ma), and 呢 (ne) respectively. These are Chinese interjections. Please refer to this.

4Sisha: There are two explanations for this. One refers to the name of the fictional world the author has created; the other means the whole of creation in this world (萬物). It is mentioned in her blog.

5Country of Zhan Yan (戰炎國): the name of their country. Literal translation is “the War Flame Country”.

6Gong hua is supposedly male. Because he doesn’t have genitals and has such delicate features, he gets mistaken for a girl.

Slender fingers soothed through the black hair that is softer than satin. Combing has just finished. It is now time to provide this beautiful hair a fitting style.

The owner of the hair sits quietly and waits for her servant to finish his job. She is the most respected Lord of The Eastern City. Of course, such a person would not need to dress herself.

 “Is any hairstyle all right?

A tray of hair accessories has already been prepared by her side. The speaker’s deep voice naturally infiltrated the silent room. It did not feel like an interruption to the stillness.

 “Do as you will.”

The girl answered half-heartedly. With her reply, he held a pin and began setting the various decorations with a skillful hand. The technique displayed a true mastery of the art. Shortly after, the originally loose threads of hair exuded a dignified, yet luxurious appearance. Thus, he packed up the remaining tools and got ready to take leave.

 “Ling Shi. Clothes.”

After placing the things back to their proper places, he was about to ask for permission to excuse himself. With the girl’s light sentence, he changed his mind and said,

 “Yes.”

He walked towards the cupboard hanging with gorgeous garments and accessories, and began searching for the perfect outfit to match her hair.

Logically speaking, people usually choose an outfit before dressing the hair. But since the girl only asked for the clothes now, he can only switch the order and make adjustments accordingly.

Then, the makeup must be redone as well.

He carried back a long-sleeved silken dress, and helped the now standing girl unclothe her original attire. Draping the dress over her, he carefully buttoned it up from the front.

Adjusting her clothes, tying the lace around her waist, lifting her arms, and slipping them into sleeves… Regardless, there was nothing erotic about the process.

“Who is commanding the troops this time?”

Actually, she rarely cares about the happenings within the city. Of course she doesn’t know whose turn it is for the welcome ceremony. Even now, she is asking only for the sake of asking.

 “Luo Shi is.”

Ling Shi replied blandly while bringing the cosmetics equipment. As expected, the girl didn’t question further. He can tell that her mood isn’t wonderful today.

Probably that is why she tried to find a topic for conversation.

Although knowing that, Ling Shi will not comfort her or do anything particularly considerate.

Because she doesn’t need it. Rather than comforting words, she prefers her depressed sentiments to be kept secret.

The supposedly impeccable esteem influences her, makes her loathe anyone who discovers any hint of vulnerability from her.

The room became quiet again. Wiping off the makeup from before, he added color to the pale, clear skin with a scarlet pencil.

Her skin is like porcelain, so delicate and flawless that foundation isn’t even needed. Only some light colors for a rosy complexion is used at most. However, since she doesn’t favor cosmetics generally, just a couple touches to the eyebrows and lips are enough.

Once done, she is again that icy, stunning Queen.

…Prouder than anyone, more noble than anyone, peerless in the whole of Eastern City.

“Is Yin Shi back?”

After the last smear of color is added to her lips, she spoke again and asked this question.

“Not yet. I’m guessing he will very soon.”

He doesn’t know what the answer she wants is.

The person was spared from being called “that rascal” or “that idiot” this time……Even if he finished his business, there’s no guarantee he’ll come back immediately. There are so many places that could prolong his trip, so many things that could be reasons for him to waste time, and they’re not just excuses.

“Tell him to come see me when he’s back.”

“Yes.”

He nodded to her instructions. Now, the girl had no other requests and is no longer facing his direction, and so he quietly left her bedroom.

Along his way down the hall, the Communication Charm rang.

He picked it up suspecting that there is trouble again.

Ever since Shen Yue opened pathways for New Residents to come in, a life-support system is constructed within both the eastern and western cities ––––– The Pond.

Although called The Pond, its size isn’t small and it does have a certain depth to it. It is fine for boats to float on it and actually takes a bit of time to make a lap. It’s actually no different from a lake, but since it has always been called The Pond, people continue to use that name. There is no particular reason why, and no one feels the need to change it.

The Pond is directly connected to Shen Yue’s energy, possessing powers to construct incoming souls. When a New Resident dies, the soul will automatically be sent to The Pond’s bottom. When soul reconstruction is complete, the person will float to top with a new, healthy body.

During this moment as well, Shen Yue’s power is in operation at the bottom of The Pond. A young boy’s soul becomes clearer in appearance, waiting to fully merge with its new body. He opened his eyes. Fragments of hopelessness and despair from before his death still lurk in his sky-blue eyes.

Discovering that he is surrounded by water and cannot breathe, the young man quickly decided to kick his feet and glide his arms to reach the water surface.

The feeling of directly touching ice cold water with a naked body cannot be called comfortable. Piercing to the bones is more like it. Accompanied by an unnamed type of panic, he cannot get used to it.

Penetrating the surface, he is welcomed by the chilling night air. The supposedly dazzling golden hair glued itself to his cheeks and neck. The boy raised his elegant face and saw the moon hanging in the distance.

Under the sparse, thin moonlight, he looked down to his arms and fingers, then to the landscape by the pond’s shore. The conclusion he came to instantly made him speechless.

After a long while in the emptiness, with a sentient voice he asked himself…

“This is… Ye Zhi1?”

“Rewrite it.”

“Fan Tong, a fortune teller with heaven-blessed talent, is afflicted with Word Reversal Syndrome. For every nine sentences out of ten that he speaks, the words change into the opposite of their intended meanings thanks to the curse of a random old lady who couldn’t stand being called an aunt…”

“Aren’t you embarrassed reading this?”

“Fan Tong, a person who died for some reason, brought this curse to another world. In this odd universe where the dead can be revived, die, and revive again, how should he live? Can he become a hero? Is his mission to save the world?”

“Stop your wishful thinking.”

“Fan Tong… I’m not writing anymore! Why do I have to write an introduction? This isn’t in my job description!”

“……”

As an ordinary civilian, Fan Tong never thought he’d suddenly wake up in another world and be told that he had died.

To live in this world, Fan Tong must adapt to a new way of life and stop himself from getting killed every other day. In addition, he also has to control his accursed mouth, improve his human relations, and make reliable friends.

“My dad told me that a man should torture his friends well and make them cry.”

“…Can I stop being your friend, Fan Tong?”

“I wish to be pulled to your side like the moon is drawn west by the Earth…”

.

.
.

No matter how breathtaking a sunset, the beauty meets its demise as the fading sun disappears behind the mountains.

No matter how radiant the dawn is, the destiny it meets in the end is to be swallowed by the darkness.

Dusk is but a prelude to the night where ebony shadows and a vexing moon reside. There the fragile moonlight can never drive away the darkness.

I stand in front of the city gates peering into the distance, yet I don’t know what I’m looking for. With wandering thoughts, I took out my notebook and added another stroke to the many scribbles. The feeling was no longer as profound as when I wrote the first.

Today, Hui Shi still hasn’t returned.

“Lord Luo Shi, we are ready to depart.”

“Hmm.”

I packed up my notebook and fixed my expression until it was no different than it usually was.

“Let’s go.”

Hui Shi always told me that I shouldn’t mind my status, that I should just have fun like other children.
My hand gently brushed against a jade plate hanging from my waist. Looking past my name carved on the plate, I caught a glimpse of the red tassel hanging beneath. With a slight frown, the usually tense feelings tightened even more.

Only five people in the Eastern City are given jade plates with the name “Shi”.
Among the five, only my tassel is the common red.

“The people sent from Luo Yue1 this time aren’t especially strong. We should get it successfully.”

Following my left, this person probably didn’t bear any ill intention when saying that. It still made my mood worse nonetheless.

“If it was Yin Shi, Ling Shi, or one of the others who came, you’d be more at ease, wouldn’t you?”

I didn’t mean for it to sound so prickly.

I wish I could be more honest. If I were, maybe more people will like me?

Although I think that, I still cannot do it.

“I’m… I’m sorry! Lord Luo Shi, that’s not what I meant!”

After hearing the terror-filled apology, I ignored that person and silently continued.

This world is called Huan Shi2. When I was born, “Shen Yue”3 has already existed for a long, long time.
In the beginning, the Eastern City and the Western City discovered “Shen Yue” together. As an artifact of the gods, Shen Yue possesses unbelievable power. It can attract the wandering souls of other worlds, create paths that lead them to ours, and give new life by providing them with new bodies. Our two cities take turns greeting these people and allow them to become part of the community as New Residents.

New Residents are important human resources. In recent years, the welcoming process gradually became a battle as neither city wants to see its enemy growing stronger. Whether it be Luo Yue’s turn or ours, those despicable people from Luo Yue hogged the New Residents. Thus, whenever news of a new soul arrives, we would both send crack troops to wait at the pathway’s exit. It typically ends with a bloodshed to obtain the soul. The time we have to defeat the other troop is when the soul’s body is still forming, before the person walks out of the pathway.

The troops who come to snatch the newcomer always prepare a spell4 to teleport themselves home. Since both The Eastern City and the Western City can do this, whoever catches the person walking out of the path first and teleports, wins.

The pathways of Shen Yue usually open when the moon is at its zenith. And only during this time would the area surrounding the pathway be safe for humans to enter. That is why they chose to depart at dusk. When they arrive, it will be the perfect time for entrance.

“Lord Luo Shi, the people from Luo Yue have also arrived.”

I heard the report from my comrade, nodded, and looked to the field across from us.

The place was lit only by the faint threads of light from the pathway’s exit. As long as we can see our enemy’s numbers and appearance, that bit is enough.

I knew they can see us as well. The light reflected from the swords waving for battle is truly stinging. The already horrible mood worsened again.

“Prepare the spell!”

Apart from the talismans used to teleport home, there are also other ones for offense and defense. As for me, I direct a group of attackers.

I hoped to vent my feelings of irritation and emptiness in this battle.

Desiring destruction, I also took out seals for attack and gazed at the people across from us.

Hui Shi, just where did you go?

I’m always searching for you, always waiting for you to return……

My name is Fan Tong. I work as a fortune teller. When doing business at my stall, I use the alias “Fan Tai Sui”1. But since I was cursed, business became very difficult… No, I should say it actually became better, though it’s a nonsense kind of “better”. It gives me complicated feelings. Oh, of course, I can’t leave out the details regarding my curse problem.
Speaking of the incident, there was seriously no justice to it at all! Why am I so unlucky––I call this lady an “aunt” once, and she curses me! She cursed that for nine out of every ten sentences I say, words will be reversed. And it came true! Her face was too mature. Was it my fault I couldn’t tell her age?

So what exactly does this mean? Take this for example. When I see a male customer, I’d want to call him a “mister”, but my mouth will blurt out “miss”. Then he beats me up. What? You say this isn’t serious? This is clearly a crisis! Also, about the nine out of ten sentences matter, let me clarify that to you as well. No need to thank me. You’re welcome.

It works like this:
“Miss.” I am hit with a painful punch.
“Miss, I didn’t mean to say that. It’s because…” Another punch.
“Miss, please let me explain…” Again.
“Miss…” And again.
“Uhm, Mister…”
“You blind ass. D’you just realize I was a guy?!”
And get beaten anyways.

That means I have a 10% chance of saying something normal. But what’s the use! If it only shows up the tenth time, doesn’t that mean I’ve already been punched nine times? Actually, no. Usually, it’s not just one punch near the end. I learned this from experience by the way… but that’s besides the point. Other than the words reversing, what’s worse is that not every single word changes. So even if I try to think the opposite of what I want to say, it’s still useless. I’ve already experienced the superpowers of this curse and the many incredible functions it comes with. Now, I am more than full from tasting its various surprises. Plus, I’m inherently an honest, good guy. Even if the guy’s some gullible idiot, I won’t take advantage of him.

There’s something else that’s tragic too. When the witch cursed me, she told me the curse will only be lifted if I can hold a normal conversation with someone for ??? sentences. Well, when she was saying that important detail, the number, some kid screamed nearby and I missed it. And before I could verify the information with her, she left… Now, who knows what absurd number it could be? Maybe it’s a million, maybe it’s nine billion! Maybe I will rot my tongue speaking for all my seventy cherry blossom springs and still never reach that number! And it’s not like I can just talk to myself either, I have to be speaking WITH another person. With my mouth, everyone’d probably run away after just a couple sentences!

Let me think very calmly. Let me think very, very calmly.

Thanks to this curse, I am still single with no girlfriend. The closest, most intimate friend to me in my life is “the slap” …seriously not something to be proud of.

There’s no helping it. Whenever I want to praise a girl’s beauty, my mouth would blurt out, “You’re ugly,” “You made me lose my appetite,” “You are the most gullible sucker I know,” or some similar others. Because of this circumstance, no girls approach me and I hope none will. If any did, they cannot be normal. I prefer quality over quantity, you know! I can live my life alone anyways! It’s just that I have to apologize to my ancestors for not producing an heir…

Girlfriends I don’t need, but my stomach I must feed. My fortune telling service can only continue. It provides me with opportunities to converse with others as well. So hey, two birds with one stone. Although I do worry about what would happen if I do business with this mouth, this is the only job I’ve had until now. So even if I pass the point of no return, I will still have to try this out.

This brings us back to what I said before. I don’t know why, but probably because my words became all mysterious sounding, and the incomprehensible sentences gave me a true master’s aura, business actually became better! You can call it profiting from a disaster, but I still can’t accept it! Even though everything I spouted is all messy gibberish, it’s beneficial for my business. Doesn’t that mean the fortunes I told before were all wrong? Dammit!

Ok, I have already calmly pondered for a long time, but it seems that that was no help. Is this a dream? Why can’t I wake up? Where is this place?

Whether it’s this white pathway or that person who entrusted me with their2last wish, why do they both feel like a dream?

Now that I think about it, I must feel sorry for that person. Even in a dream, my defect follows me and won’t let go. Made me waste so much time before I could agree to their dying wish. The person looked like they were about to die with their eyes open and could never rest in peace…

…so just what is this place?

If this isn’t a dream, could I be cursed by someone again? Who did I anger this time? I already refrained from addressing my customers lately!

I examined my surroundings then noticed the end of this path. I might as well walk towards it and see. I’m already so unfortunate. What else can scare me?

Walking and walking, I arrived at the exit. When I poked my head out, I discovered that… I am still quite scared.

The attacks used by the two sides fighting each other outside are seriously no joke. The special effects I couldn’t understand, but the exploding meat and blood? I understand that no matter what logic is behind it.

Sigh. God, what should I do now? Should I bet on a winning team? Can I wake up from this dream if it wins? Ahahahahah. Ouch! That guy over there split in half! Can I faint now? Is that even possible in a dream?

“Hurry and come out!”

While the two sides ferociously beat each other to a bloody pulp and I watch them wondering if I should place a bet, a pretty boy suddenly appeared in front of me. Standing a distance from me, he told me to join the sea of drama…… N… No. It’s becoming more and more like a dream, yet it’s becoming more and more… unlike one.

“No! I don’t have a chicken’s worth of ability! Telling me to go out is the same as telling me to die!”

Heavens! I spoke a normal sentence! It’s so touching to be able to express myself properly, especially during this crucial moment regarding life and death…

The pretty boy wrinkled his eyebrows. How odd. I didn’t say anything wrong. Did he not understand me? Even if he didn’t understand, can’t he see my strong will to live?

“What are you talking about? You’re already dead. Could it be that you didn’t know, Fan Tong?”

Ah?

What?

Wait wait wait waiiiiiiitttt a minute! I won’t fuss about how you know my name, but how could I have died without knowing it! So is this heaven? Or is it hell? Can I keep some hope that this is actually heaven? Though this place looks nothing like it…

“Master Luo Shi! Behind you!”

While I was still confused about the whole matter, the pretty boy, who I’m guessing is called Luo Shi, dodged to the side with a surprisingly light and graceful step… And in my face comes an enormous fireball, flying towards me for full-body contact.

I heard a couple screams and cries, saw the pretty boy look at me with a panicked expression on his face, and… because it seriously hurts too much, I can’t broadcast the situation right now. In short, it’s about the same as when three billion dollars worth of cash is pressing on your body, the same ugh feeling that makes you want to cuss. You guys all look so surprised. Can’t someone just come and help me?

I’m already dead. Although I still haven’t accepted the fact or figured out why I died, is there really a need to kill me again?

No, actually, it is still debatable whether this counts as a dead person dying, or if it’s just a corpse blasting into pieces…

 “Just who are you?”

I am… a Flower.

Flowers aren’t like you. Flowers can’t move, can’t talk. You…

I can move. I have walked past countless moons.

I can see. I have seen the vast fields and oceans.

I can talk. I spoke love, hate, and vengeance.

But, I am still a flower.

***

The Leaf Tribe is leaving the mainland.

They were this continent’s last branch of Leaves. Concealed in the high mountain’s forests, they lived carefree and happy lives. Now, they must travel across a different ocean and head towards a different land. This is because the Spirit Tree they always relied on for life has grown too old, too old… It’s dying.

With no choice, they must escape to another continent. There, other branches of Leaves are willing to welcome their kindred. They have a strong Spirit Tree which is strong enough to support this branch of refugee Leaves.

The leaves began to prepare for their journey. Some started to make boats in the forests near the shore. Some started learning the techniques to navigate across the oceans. Some started gathering food and drinks.

In order to travel and land safely at the new continent, everyone was working hard to gain knowledge as much as they can. They knew their Tree is about to die. To survive, they must learn everything as quickly as possible. Although, “quickly” refers to time as long as a human’s whole lifespan.

The Tree has about a hundred years before its death so it allows enough time for the Leaves to leave their home village.

A hundred years feel so long, but for the migration of an entire species, to the ten thousands of Leaves who will cross unknown oceans, a hundred years didn’t seem to be enough. Leaves have a life expectancy of nearing a thousand years. Their pace of living has always been unhurried.

In this busy time period, the fading tree blossomed, probably for its last time. It bore only a single, black flower.

The leaves didn’t like the Flower.

A vibrant and colorful race, the Leaf species feature refined and exquisite appearances. Their eyes and hairs range in beautiful hues of lime, azure, silver-purple, luminous gold, orange, and many others. No matter the color, the characteristic is luster and vibrancy.

On the other hand, the Flower possessed pure black hair and dim red eyes. Both colors were so bleak and dreary, as though they are reminders of the Tree’s end of life. That’s why the Leaves don’t like the black Flower. They refused to accept their Tree’s approaching death.

Alike the color, this Flower’s growth was also abnormal. Usually, Flowers can speak after only ten years, can run wild after twenty, and by thirty years, Flowers can fully utilize their given powers.

Flowers are the children of Trees, the Leaf Tribe’s guardian. They can control any plant to protect the Leaves.

But, that Flower couldn’t do anything; he couldn’t even walk. He stepped out before, but he is always curled under the Tree now, shrouding his face with that long, messy, black hair. The flower doesn’t look, listen, or do anything… he doesn’t even speak.

Although the Leaves didn’t like the Flower, they did not bully him. The kindhearted species wouldn’t be able to do something so cruel. They only continued to gather knowledge of the seas, and biding their time until the moment to leave. They neglected the Flower.

Attached to their homeland, the Leaves waited and waited, until the evergreen Tree suddenly began to turn red and yellow. The changes dismayed them, but they finally understood that it is time to go.

Their Tree is on the verge of death.

This time, the reality truly did sink into every Leaf’s heart.

The lord of the Leaf Tribe sternly announced that all Leaves must vacate the area. By year’s end, the last ship would leave the shores, and any Leaf not on board will be left behind.

After his announcement, the Leaves finally started transitioning, slowly yet certainly.

Around this time, the Flower finally stood. He left the shades of the World Tree to follow the troops, waddling unsteadily with each step. He is unaccustomed to walking, so he walked very slowly. He gradually drifted from the head of the crowd to its middle, then lagged to its end.

Eventually, he had to walk behind the last Leaf in line. That Leaf displayed silver-purple hair, which makes him easy to recognize in the forest. The Flower looked at his hair and followed him. Even if that Leaf left the others, the Flower would most likely follow.

The Leaf with silver-purple hair occasionally looked back at the Flower. Although he didn’t like the Flower either, he couldn’t bear it.

That is still their flower.

This flower was supposed to be their pride, their treasure, their most powerful guardian.

But, the tree is going to die, and they must leave.

They cannot take the Flower with them. That’s why, since the Flower’s birth, no one dared look at him… This is a flower destined to be abandoned by them, so how can they?

***

Countless large ships sit afloat on the clear ocean surface. All these white and gray ships were handmade by the Leaf Tribe. The ones coated in vivid colors were sent from the other continent to welcome them.

The silver-purple haired Leaf stopped in his steps and lifted his head to see the waters. The ocean was covered with ships. All Leaves on board are looking at him… as well as the Flower following him.

The silver-purple haired Leaf hesitated for a moment, but still turned around to face the flower. That was the first time he looked so carefully at the Flower. Although the Flower’s hair is black, he has a body of fair white skin. Paired together, the colors were not as dreary as he imagined. The contrast was rather eye-catching.

This Flower may possess astonishing power… but the Leaf cannot think this way, nor can he take liking to the Flower. Because they were about to abandon the flower.

The Leaf tried his best to suppress his expressions and only apologized, “I’m sorry, so sorry, but you cannot follow us onto the ship.”

The Flower only looked at him with a pair of dim red eyes.

The Leaf avoided the Flower’s gaze and said with his head hanging slightly lower, “My Name is Yinqie Zi. If you, if you are safe and well in the future… please come to the Continent of Jun De to find us.”

The flower continued to look at him. The Leaf didn’t know whether the flower understood him or not.

“Ye Zhu, are you boarding now?”

Yinqie Zi turned around and saw two Leaves walking down from the ships to ask him. He nodded his head and asked, “Is everything ready?”

“Yes, we can depart now.”

“Then let us go.”

After he finished talking, Yinqie Zi wanted to turn around to look at the Flower. However, he stiffened and ultimately did not turn back. He only continued to walk ahead with the other two Leaves.

The Flower also walked a few steps. Yinqie Zi and the other two stopped and wrinkled their brows at him, yet none of them wanted to tell the Flower to stop. They continued to walk towards the ship once more, and the Flower followed again. The leaves stopped in their footsteps again…

After this motion repeated itself for a few times, it appeared the Flower finally understood. He watched Yin Qie Zi and the other two get on the ship, but did not follow anymore. He only stood at the ocean coast with his line of vision always following Yin Qie Zi.

The Flower’s stopping gave all the Leaves a sigh of relief. If the Flower followed onto the ship, they wouldn’t know what to do.

Should they beat or yell at him? Force him to leave?

But it’s the flower’s job to always be near the Leaves. How can they penalize him for doing what he’s supposed to?

The flower stood at the ocean coast, widening his eyes too look at all the Leaves on the ships. He began to speak.

“Why do you hate me?”

***

Almost all the Leaves on the decks were looking at that Flower. Yinqie Zi felt especially horrible, because the Flower wasn’t looking at anyone else, but rather, directly at him.

They were all curiously surprised to see the Flower opening his lips. However, they were too far away and couldn’t tell whether words originated from Flower’s mouth.

But that was no longer important, because their tree is dying.

If the Tree gave birth to a Flower and died, the Flower would also follow and become insane.

A flower gone berserk is extremely dangerous.

The flower stood there in a daze for a long, long time. Now, not a single ship was left on the water’s surface.

The flower’s job was to stay by the Leaves’ side and protect them, but the Flower couldn’t find a single Leaf left, so he didn’t know what he’s supposed to do anymore. Thus, he only stood by the coast, dumbly watching the ships float further and further away.

Children still long for their home in the end, and so the Flower began to miss the Tree. He began to walk towards his home, to where the Tree is.

Although there were no longer Leaves to escort him on his trip home now.

The Flower was never in contact with the world outside the Leaf Tribe. He didn’t know that Leaves are a powerful existence when in a group, and that is why no one will dare harm a crowd of Leaves. However, this road turns out to be much more dangerous than imagined when he is alone.

Poisonous plants aren’t considered dangerous to Flowers, and no plants will harm Flowers. At the same time, Flowers do not eat plants either.

Many wild beasts have targeted the Flower before, but they could detect that he is not just a common, ordinary prey. After approaching to a certain distance, they would naturally leave.

Thus, to the flowers, the most dangerous thing in the whole forest are humans.

Humans fancied the Leaves’ beautiful appearance and would capture them as home decorations and toys.

After walking for only a few days, the Flower encountered a group of adventurers. Everyone in it was a human. The adventurers heard that the Leaves were migrating away, and wanted to try their luck at any Leaf that’s been left stranded. If they could catch even one Leaf, it meant large sums of money has already landed in their pocket.

They didn’t happen upon any Leaf, but rather found a Flower.

They rejoiced, thinking they have found a Leaf, and captured him. Soon afterwards though, they dubiously looked at the creature and wondered… just what is this?

The Leaves’ appearance is slightly different from humans, but it is still largely alike. At least the general outer appearance is the same. It’s just that the Leaves’ hair and eye colors are more vibrant, their bodies more slender and their faces more alluring.

The Flower was different. He was naked with no clothing on, yet no features discriminating his sex could be found. His appearance was that of a fifteen year old girl or an even younger boy. He didn’t even have nipples, something both males and females should have. There were no sex organs below either, and not a strand of hair was found on his body. All he had was a luscious black dense of hair.

At first glance, the Flower’s black hair didn’t appear be anything special. Yet on closer inspection, the hair strands’ movement looked odd. The wind wasn’t blowing his hair as his hair looked like it’s floating naturally on its own.

The adventurers were a bit startled and astounded, but since the Flower looked harmless, their panic quickly disappeared. Thus, they captured the Flower pretending the hair’s movement never existed.

***

The flower’s appearance wasn’t exceptional and could only be called delicate at best. Plus he didn’t have any sex features, which gave humans nothing to play and toy around with.

Eventually, the Leaf Tribe’s treasure ——— Flower, tumbled into a circus troupe. Locked within a cage while crowds after crowds of humans jeered and laughed at this sexless freak.

In reality, the Flower didn’t mind it much.

He didn’t understand the human language. He missed home a little and wanted to return to the big shade under the Tree… Though, he remembered that there are no Leaves left around the Tree now, and was thus not in a hurry to go back.

At least by staying here, there were still some humans around. Although the environment caused his mood to be a bit grim. Only when the troupe is moving to another location could he see a ray of sunlight. The horrid environment made him feel a bit cold, a bit tired, a bit hungry… but all of this was still a within tolerable extent.

The circus people brought various foods for the Flower and saw that it touched nothing but water. As the Flower did not die of hunger, the circus men were elated to know that they can save on food costs. From then on, they didn’t try to bring any other food and left only a bucket of water inside the cage. Only after a long time would they refill it.

The days passed one by one, but the Flower didn’t have a sense of time. He only sat inside the cage, thinking about the Tree, about sunlight, about clean water, about the departing leaves, about the Leaf with silver purple hair…

Until one day, a strange feeling wafted through the Flower’s whole body.

Pain!

Amid the immense pain, he suddenly understood. His home has died… the Tree died.

The Tree was far but still, the Flower could not withstand the immeasurable pain. It drove him mad. The head of black hair writhed wildly like snakes… He lifted his head and screamed towards the sky.

Masses of wood skewered to the surface, piercing through the metal cage, through the circus’ tent, through all the horrified crying humans.

Thick vines squirmed across the ground and ignored any obstacle blocking its way, crushing across the carriages, the city, everything…

***

When the Flower was conscious again, the area has become a decimated wasteland. With black red liquid dried on his pale body, the Flower appeared eerily shocking. His hair no longer waved from the clotted blood… He was so full.

So full he wanted to barf.

Really full, yet really empty. No living creature was around, and the Flower became alone yet again.
